My poor little Coco dearest. I'll tell you as much of the story as I can & try to make sense of it. Don't mind the angry faces, I get so mad about some of these things!

Dad had to have a purebred hunting dog(pound dogs don't hunt, you know:mad: ). He bought himself a $300 Chocolate Lab. Later, we find out there were 11 pups in the litter, not 10 like we saw. One died shortly after birth. Another pup died at 10 months of age as his liver never developed proerply. It's a miracle he lived to 10 months of age, let alone 10 days. Five pups left of the 9 have died being hit by cars(farm dogs, they're dispoasble  ). Coco was spayed at 6 months of age. As much as dad wanted to breed her, there was no way I was going to let that happen. Her quality as a bitch was questionable. Her gradnsire's are FC Nan Dool Elwood Blues & Jazz's Buffalo Bill Cody MH. Whatever that means(I don't care about a pedigree, I love them all-mutts or papered). I am not concerned about there being any more litters like Coco's as the stud froze his nuts being left outside too long & is now sterile.

Now, here's the problem. Coco started dribbling at 7 months of age. The vet said she was spay incontinenet & gave me Estradiol to give her. Now, about 2 months ago I told the vet the pills weren't working(again) & if he didn't get me something, else we are taking our business elsewhere(we hve 8 outdoor cats, 3 indoor cats, & 2 dogs). He got me Proin to give Coco. It worked wonders! Then, she had a weekend(of course, no vet around) where she was full-out peeing like when she was first diagnosed. By Monday, she was doing much better. Since then, she has been licking her butt like crazy, nipping at it. She seems to be dribbling a little all the time now. I would call the vet, but I am sure he will treat Coco for an infection. That's what he always does.

I find myself wondering, is she really spay incotinent? Do I want to kick the vet's butt(yes)?? Should I take her elsewhere? I have gotten mad with this vet in the past & taken my cat elsewhere(which probaly saved teh cat's life). I read this website:
http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/clientED/incont.asp
Now I am thinking maybe she has a birth defect??

I understand that this may sound bad, but my dad is the old farmer type. He thinks we should have bred Coco & we would never had had these problems. He thinks we can just make her an outside dog & ignore the problems. The vet we use is the make a guess & treat for it type. Mom & dad pay for the vet bills, but I think I can get Coco to a decent vet. I am sure we will continue to use the moron, but basically for vaccinations only(the other vet cahrges a small fortune-2x what any other vet charges for vaccs).

Now, what's your advice? Any ideas? I was wondering, does Proin need to be given every 12 hours or pretty close? We are really bad about that, so I hesitate to keep her on Proin. I would like to look for another hormone, but I don't know any other good ones. If I missed something, or you have any other questions for me, please ask. I want to get Coco better so she can be her normal self again.

if it were me, I'd ask the opinion of another vet. (if you can) did I read correctly that you are really bad about administering the medication as directed? I'm not meaning to sound rude at all, that's just how I understood and I know I could be wrong. IF that is the problem, then it isn't going to work until given as directed. IF I am wrong, then you could call the vet that prescribed it and discuss the situation. he may change dosage, change meds, or insist he see her again. actually, she really may have an infection. I'd go with the second opinion if you don't trust the original vet. but try to do something soon. she sounds a bit uncomfortable, and you don't want a bigger problem than she has already. keep us posted. I hope she feels better soon. :)

We had our recently deceased gsd Brandy on Proin 50 mg 2 times a day for almost 2 years. She did very well on it. It is a chew-able. My understanding of this type of med is that it worked best for older stress type incontinence. If she missed a a dose no problem But if she missed a couple she would leak.

Spaying should only be done after the dog has fully grown. I know a lot of people will disagree with me on this but after working with rescued large breed dogs. They need these hormons to develope properly. I like to spay after the first heat. I understand why vets like to spay early but in the long run the dog is better off after she has fully developed. Remember, vets are a bussiness. They also sale Science Diet in their offices and we all know how good of a food that is.
My female Ridgeback had the same problem as yours ever since I got her. She is now 11 months old and she is just now starting to have better control. It sounds to me like something about the spaying made he bladder prolapse. Usually dogs that have this problem have as puppies then over time get better not the other way around. Drugs also only cover up symptoms of a bigger problem. I would spend a little bit more money and try to take her to a holistic vet. Demand that you get an x-ray of her bladder.

rowdy ridgeback, I wish so very much there was a holistic vet near me. I have a cat that I believe would greatly benefit from seeing one.

Debi, you didn't sound rude. It is rather difficult, with my schedule, to administer Coco's medication on a set schedule. I e-mailed the maker of Proin & asked them some questions. They told me that the effects of Proin wear off after 12 hours(or begin to).

I spoke with my vet today & told him the problems(again). He said, "well, maybe that's just something she will have to get used to." Like Heck she will! I didn't know what hormone he was ordering for me, then he tells me, knowing full well that I sometimes have a tight schedule(I point blank told him a pill that is given 1x a day or less often would work best), he orders a pill that Coco needs 2x a day. every 12 hours. I am going to make sure Coco gets her pill at 8am & 8pm until Monday. We will see how she does by then. No matter what, we have a vet appt. w/ a real vet on Monday(she's the one who said to give her until monday).

Feel free to keep the ideas coming. The vet we are going to on Monday knows I use chat forums to get ideas. I will print this out & take it with so I make sure to address all of the problems & solutions I get here.

As for bloodwork, we had some done about a month ago to check her kidneys. The vet reccomends checking them every 6 months, just to be safe.

What makes me wonder if the Proin is working is that she hasn't missed a dose, she is off by an hour or two, & she is still leaking. I may just be paranoid, though.

I will make sure to let you know how the vet goes on Monday. Thanks for the ideas & advice. I appreciate it & so does Coco!
