Hi all,

I've got a question about my 7 month old English Shepherd Bodie. Bodie's first fecal exam at 12-15 weeks (ish) came back positive for Giardia and roundworms. Our vet told us to treat him with Panacur and if I remember correctly, give him Advantage multi as well. At that time he didn't really have any symptoms. His stool was pretty firm most of the time. We went to a different vet for his follow up check up b/c we didn't like the first vet for a variety of reasons. There was also a big lag between these dates because of a couple of things that went wrong with contacting us with the results. His poo got pretty soft during that time and has stayed that way (gets softer in the evenings, especially after a lot of activity). The new vet conducted another fecal test. I think it was a centrifuge test. Bodie came back positive for coccidia and giardia. We treated Bodie with Panacur again, We treated him with Panacure + albon? (yellow liquid), metronidazole, & switched to sentinel. We also bleached as much as we could inside and out.

We just got back from a road trip with him to Colorado. He had a neg centrifuge test prior to the trip and a neg test after. However, his poo has gotten even worse now (since the return from the trip). And his appetite seems lower.
The vet told us to give him Metamucil with his food. He's been on a mix of Innova puppy and adult since he was young.

Any thoughts on what might be wrong?

Thanks!

I don't know what's wrong, but you might want to try giving him some canned plain pumpkin. It's helps the digestive system.

Did you give him water from the places you stopped? Some of my dogs would get diarrhea if they got water from a different source.

I tried canned squash for few meals a couple of weeks ago and it didn't seem to change much. And yeah, he was drinking water at the different places we went. He also ate a lot of snow.

So I've started giving him yogurt with each meal and switched him to the beef/lamb version of Innova. I'm going to give it a month or two to see what happens.

My dog had chronic giardia which intermittently tested negative. His symptoms were similar to what you were seeing, except he had episodes of bloody mucousy stools as well. We put him on long term metronidazole, and pumpkin, and metamucil.

It took months, but now he is fine.

I've heard that pumpkin is good for dog's digestion and stomach too. Also yogurt as well, which may be a little easier when/if you're on the road. You could always try some pumpkin treats, maybe with ginger in them? Switching foods to a less rich brand could help too..
good luck and hope your pooch is feeling better soon!
