Libby had to have a c-section yesterday. I felt so bad for her . She started her hard contractions and pushing at 10:15am and didn't produce a puppy for 2 hours. So I called the vet, and rushed her up there. He examined her and she was fully dialated, but there wasn't a puppy in the birth canal. So he took her back and she had surgery.
Turns out that there was 5 puppies in one horn and they were stuck , thats why they never desended to the birth canal. We had the x-ray done at the end of last month and knew their was at least 6 pups, but there was one hiding so she was carring 7. Unfortunately one didn't make it from being squeezed from too many puppies in one horn. But I am very thankful that Libby is doing great and so are her 6 beautiful healthy puppies!
I was really worried that her maternal instinct wouldn't take over and that she might reject the pups. I was prepared for that, but wanted the puppies to be raise by mom so they would get the very important bond and comfort they need from her.
But after sitting with her, petting her, and reasurring her that everything was ok and telling her she's a good girl while the puppies nursed, her instincts kicked in .Now she is being the best little mama!! Even though she trusts me , when I hold one of the puppies she is constantly licking it . Almost like she's sayin, "that's my baby, be careful.
Well anyways, we have 4 males and 2 females, and Libby and babies are happy and healthy. Libby has an appointment in may to get fixed. Even though the vet said her uterus is in great shape and the chances of it happining again is slim especially since it wasn't anything inharited, it was more like a freak of nature thing . I told him I didn't want to chance it, and I definitly didn't want her to have to have another c-section.
Oh, one more thing the puppies were born on my birthday!!!!!
