I'm trying to train Charlie to stand up and put his front legs on my thighs when I say "Up!"

What I am doing is saying "Up!" and then grabbing his front legs and putting them on my thighs. Then, I give him a treat.

I don't think this is the best way, because I don't think he knows that he is supposed to put his front legs on my thighs by himself...

Does anyone have any suggestions for a better technique?

I'm trying to train Charlie to do more things, because currently, all he knows how to do is to sit and to lie down. If there are other basic commands that you think you can help me with, please do! :p

Anyway, thanks for anyone who has any advice to give!

Try breaking your trick down into small steps and reward each step. Clicker training is excellent for this. Tons of info on the net about Clicker training.
Good Luck!
