Unusual puppy prices?

Is it true that you should price puppies according to color and size? This is what one chi breeder said...
He has two litters right now and they are all the same age (6 weeks). He has the pups priced from 350 to 650. It sounds a little weird to me.

I totally disagree. When pet puppies are priced the same it denotes nothing but acceptance of the fact that the puppy is a pet regardless of color, size or markings.
In some breeds, certain colors are harder to breed and therefore show prospects of that color are far more expensive (ie: Harlequin Great Danes) but pets should be priced the same regardless of color. JMO.

How many litters does this guy breed per year? I'd be wary of someone with two litters at the same time.

That's what scares me !!! It takes so much time and effort to do one litter properly , I could never done 2 at one time.! Some charge more for females figuring that the new owners will use her for money. Since I had a no breed clause, I charged the same. But these were Goldens.... I really don't know about other breeds and their colors.... but would say that in some cases, if a " rare " showed up ...they would be more valuable to a protential breeder.

I understand the price difference between show quality puppies. An outstanding show prospect should get a higher price than a "maybe, maybe not" show puppy. But I agree, pet puppies should be priced all the same.

I agree also... It doesn't seem to be the norm though.

I looked at some pomeranian breeders not too long ago, and some puppies had prices like, for show $1200, for pet $450, for the same dog. That is just so weird. That, plus they have different prices depending on the color as well. It made the whole thing pretty suspicious to me.

I've heard of that happening. I think it's a scam personally. Show dogs vs pet dogs sure I can see a difference in price... but coat coloring?

What are their rare coat colors that they are charging so much for? If you can get that answered from this breeder you could check with the local kennel club to see if they really are rare. Or are they just colors that would be judged as defective?

Is the smaller ones more expensive? Isn't the smaller ones also the ones with more behavioral/health problems? I don't know much about Chihuahuas but I think that's what I heard.

I'd also be pretty **** wary fo someone who had 2 litters at the same time. Actually I will be honest I am pretty wary of breeders altogether.. I think I'd like to strike up at least an accquaintanceship with the breeder before I'd buy from them. Long term association would probably suit me better if I were to ever go the puppy route.

I support responsible breeding as previously noted in other threads... but I'm still wary altogether of breeders as a whole.

  7. My puppies all go for the same price. There are just different conditions of sale for companion puppies and show prospect puppies.

All breeders here sell the pet quality cheeper than the show quality, which I feel is correct, when people price to colour it is usually people selling a rare colour! which is nuts because the pup will be pet quality only as its out of stnadered

She had a tan puppy more expensive than another tan puppy, and both of them were only pet quality.

I asked him about it and he said that the more expensive tan pup was closer to the akc breed standard, but not "show quality". He also has a black puppy that is priced higher than some of the other pups just because of an old wives tale. The wives tale is that blacks dogs shed less.

    uhh wow, what a dork...

i should take pics of the big black balls of hair that build up...hehehe

yah, i know nothing about breeding, but if its not show quality - then what the heck is the point of paying more for an 'almost' one??

its like paying more for a fake gucci purse cause it was made close to the real gucci factory (ok not really, but just as stupid!)

  14. He should come to this house.

I pick up a vacuum cleaner bag FULL every week.

Someone find me a ROTTWEILER who does not shed. LOL

People who price their puppies per an old wives tale are generally nto someone I want to be dealing with. A dog is a dog is a dog... and I haven't met very many black dogs that just don't shed much.

Hmmm... speaking of shedding dogs I need to vacuum.
