Um.... people... you know it's ANIMALS we signed ourselves up for, right? Yes... dogs lick their butts and any other private part they can reach. They also have extra enzymes in their saliva to break down bacteria. It's not like they have tampax, toilet paper, showers/tubs with Dial soap, etc. So, while you deem it so utterly GROSS, it comes with the territory. I'm sure you already know this, but just a reminder ;)

That's right! Good point. My husband's the same way he won't let the dogs lick his face because "they lick their butts"  !

It is kinda funny... But then knowing what you gotta do to make them stop doing it!! Anyway, to the OP, it may be anal glands, and could possibly be just cleaning blood/feces/urine off of her privates.

Just a heads up, your dog could be impacted. This isn't dangerous, and the problem is easy to fix. Your vet, or some groomers can help you out. This is a pretty common thing among dogs. My current dog doesn't have it, but my two other dogs did.

If you dog is licking its butt excessively, or dragging its butt across the carpet excessively, or when he goes to the bathroom, he goes, and then tries to go another 3 or 4 times after that but nothing happens, these are sings that there COULD be impaction.

To get really gross, essentially what the vet has to do in order to release secretions that may be caught in the anal glands, he would have to stick his finger up there and squeeze the stuff out.

Yum.. time for breakfast.

I agree

I second that. The other thing I've read "Dogs for Dummies" is that it can be the anal glands themselves...sometimes they get swelled up...I read you can just put them in the tub and use a washcloth to feel around in there and squeeze the stuff out - but personally I'd rather have a vet do it! Our dog was dragging it's butt around and we thought that was the problem.

Also our dog licked it's butt like crazy for the last 10 days before she had her pups...I kept telling her she was licking the wrong place...but she wouldn't stop!

Bexi, 2 things I can think of. Is she spayed? If not is she licking around her vulva area? I had a GSD who wasn't spayed and was licking a lot. It turned out that she had an Interuterine Infection. I noticed a gooie discharge in that area. I had to have her spayed to get rid of the infection.
She can also have a UTI...treated with antibiotics.
