so ive been talking with a friend of mine today...
she does wildlife rehab...

today at aproximatly 9am she whent out to the pens on the back of her acre (backs onto a state park) to take care of her pre-release coons. 10 am she heads back to the house...
11am she realizes she left her drink bottle and sunglasses by the pens and walks back over there...
where she finds...

1 large dog, skin and boanes, chained to a tree using some chain and a bit of rope, and 10 puppies of aproximatly 1 week old.

the female was dead but still warm and she rushed them all to the vets, vet said shed been dead no more than 1/2 hour.
the pups were chilled and weak, belly full of parisites, but feisty...

the mother looks to be a great dane or dane mix, but was only 39 lbs when they weighed her body, she was nothing but tight leather stretched over a skeletal frame, there was nothing more than drips of milk in her teets, she had a bad case of ear mites, some kind of skin condition, and was covered in scars scabs and what look to be slashing wounds.
oh and a belly full of parisites.

Vet deemed she died of extreem malnutition, and was likley in horrible shape before the pups, once the litter came along they essentially drained what was left from her)
she had no collar/tags/chips/tat or any other identifying feture.
theres been no missing reports, and theres alot of byb's for "mastif types" in her area...
vet was suprised she survived labor.
autopsy reveled 2 retained puppies and a bad case of heartworm to top it all off.

of the puppies.
they are weak, 1 was dead on site and 1 passed in transit to the vet.
2 passed a few hours ago despite attempts to revive.

they all have worms, but no mites and their skin scrapings came up clean, no fleas either...

the vets crowded and she didnt want to send them to the only shelter neer by (a kill shelter who euthanizes orphans due to lack of help and space), and shes got a lactating female shepard at home, she picked up off the side of the road, some guy had her tied to a table for "free and pregnant!" she had 2 puppies and lost both (still born), she has however happily taken these babies in and the vets deemed it safe (id personally be a little worried but...) shes also suplimenting with bottles for them all...

shes horrified, shes seen abuse, and shes seen horrible people...
but to tie your dying dog and dump its 10 puppies to a tree at the edge of some state park... HOW?! its not like this was next to a road, it was at the back of a pretty heavily wooded yard a good distance form a house...he didnt even dump her neer the coon cages, instead it was the other end of the property line, luckily she walks it a few times aday and "got a weird feeling"

people never cease to discust me.

the 7 pups remainding have all be warmed up and are feeding like troopers! shes not sure what bred they might be other than "part great dane"
shes going to try and get pictures for me (cause she knows i love me the danes :p) and is trying to talk me into taking one when there old enough LOL, not me she has to convince though :p.

im just hoping the remainding babies survive, i dont understand how anyone could do that.
poor girl...vet says she was no more than 2 yrs old and should have been closer to 125lbs or so...

Things like this make me lose faith in humanity. :(

I just can never understand how people can be so callous and show such disregard for life.

I really hope the puppies do well from here on out with such excellent care. And so glad they were found and helped by such wonderful people.

I dont even know what to say about that...

I hope that the surviving pups make it, and can find a LOVING home once they are healthy enough... :(

Oh dear god. That poor dog! This upsets me so much. I don't have a lot of faith in humanity anymore.

I hope the babies have happy healthy lives. Thank goodness your friend came by when she did.

That was a very terrible thing with the poor puppies and mother, some people are really heartless. Just hoping the remaining puppies could live just normal.

What a heartbreak. Hopefully the pups will have a better chance so her labor at the end of her life can have one good thing about it. I pray she is in a better place.

It doesn't make me lose my faith . . .think of all the people who helped. Some of us are rotten . . . but the rest of us are capable of doing wonderful things. We just have to do our best to make up for the bad ones . . . and try to find the bast*rd who did this . . .

Guess there is one small blessing that whoever (and it was probably NOT the owner) cared enough to bring them to someone that would help. GLad your friend was there doing what your friend does. If not those pups might have died as ugly a death as thier mum.

this morning one of the 7 is not doing great, she got him on fluids but its not looking good...

the others however seem to be doing great.

a police report has been filed, along with reports to the local animal control.
some of the wounds look like possible dog bites, others look like serated knife wounds.
theres a couple of possible dog fighters in the area that are under investigation...

unfortunatly though with no identification...its unlikely theyll be able to trace her back without public assistance. she was a mismarked mantle which in there area are aparently a dime a peice.

lucy (my friend) is not giving up on this though, shes got friends asking around CAREFULLY, mostly has her friends "looking for a great dane or great dane mix" puppy...hoping someone will direct them to the mother dogs owner...

That is terrible :(

I'm so glad that they are getting a fair shot at a good life. Thank goodness for people like your friend. What a terrible person to have done something like that.

good news is, the 6 remainding pups seem to be doing extreemly well, 2 females the rest males and my friend and her vet both think (especially with the size, colors and rate there going) that they may actually be pure danes...possibly dane x mastif...

unfortunatly 3 of the boys are very lighlty marked "harlequins" one is solid white, another has only 2 small grey spots and the thurd while a little heavier marked is still more than 80% white particularly over the head. (very lightly marked harlequins, are highly likely to be deaf and/or have visionn problems)

they can still live long happy lives if they are, but itll make finding perminent homes difficult as they will need to go to experienced or VERY dedicated homes...

she has a friend close by who has a deaf aussie whos offered to foster one if there hearing impaired...
and lucy has decided she will be keeping one, if it does turn out any are "special needs" itll be one of those pups.

and im seriously considering fostering one of the lightly marked boys if they are hearing impaired as well as i have the experience...
just havent told the bf yet lol. (hed SOOOO kill me!)

she has great homes lined up for the 3 black/black and white ones already though :)
