I absolutely HATE when shows I like have "vicious" dogs on and of course they are all GSDs, dobes, pit bulls, etc.

I'm on a Bones kick and in the first season there is an episode where a body is found after a person is tied up and the murderer lets "stray, hungry dogs" in to kill/eat them. Of COURSE the stray hungry dogs shown are a rottweiler and a GSD.

I am watching another episode now where a body was found in the woods but they can't get to it because a doberman has an arm and is guarding it from the authorities

It drives me nuts, they have millions of dollars to dump into making these shows but can't be educated enough about it to make them realistic and not play into an already unfair/false situation

I *think* it was Bones where there was some sort of fighting ring and a dog was suspected to be a weapon used for a murder. (I remember resenting the implication that they made of DA=vicious HA dogs.) I think it was a GSD or mal, not a usual "fighting" breed. But they did make a point of saying it wasn't the dog's fault and Bones wanted to adopt it and it was PTS before she could.

Ugh, I'm sorry. I'm having a really bad day with words and I can't figure out a way to word what I want to say better. Hopefully you guys understand or someone else who saw it can explain better.

The dogs were supposedly starved to ensure they would attack. Type casting. Probably wouldn't have had the same impact if they used shitzu's.

I actually find it comical to watch, LOL

Roscoe and Desoto from Oliver and Company:

Diablo in Beverly Hills Chihuahua:

The Doberman Gang:

Apollo and Zeus (the Lads) in Magnum PI

I could go on and on.........but nearly anytime you see "junk yard dogs" in a movie, whether it's animated or not, it's a doberman. It makes me laugh even if it does perpetuate their image. Though it is very true dobes were definitely bred to be human aggressive, that part is no lie.

I dont think it's them not being educated... it's just more believable for the audience to have a breed that has the reputation. yes Labs can be aggressive but the general idea is that they are all lovely wonderful family dogs. So if they had a Lab on the show playing "the role" it WOULDN'T be realistic for the majority of people who aren't into dogs like we are.

As terrible as it sounds, when ever shows like that are on I'm just relieved if it's not a pit. It doesn't make me happy that it is any breed and I tend not to watch those shows, but it makes me extra unhappy if it's a pit.

Just as a side note, I saw Oliver and Co. as a little kid and LOVED Roscoe and Desoto, so much so that I went on a "pretending I was a doberman" kick and thought that they got a very raw deal in the movie....

I think Roscoe and Desoto are ADORABLE... and all the little kids at the farmers market called Kaylee "el Diablo" during the summer of Beverly Hills Chihuahua - it made them want to pet her, so they could tell their friends that they petted "el Diablo" - it actually did a lot of good, we were approached by people that normally would have avoided us like the plague.

And don't forget Alpha from the movie "Up"... LOVE Alpha!

That said... it makes me somewhat nervous to see Dobermans getting more popular in the "mean dog" role on TV. A few years ago one of Ronin's cousins played the part of an aggressive Doberman in the soap opera The Bold & the Beautiful - Topper was a great actor (he's an amazing sport dog, took 4th place at the 2005 IDC Weltmeisterschaft) BUT his owner/breeder got a a lot of criticism for putting the breed in such a negative light.

For some reason I just thought of Beethoven. When the lady is looking at Beethoven and says she wants a "big, mean, junkyard dog." Then when he pees on her she's like, "got any pit bulls?"

Yep, that was Bones...and it was a mali.

What was worse in that episode was that they had CM make an appearance and portrayed him as some sort of doggy magician.

Oh I remember that one. The 'culprit' dog didn't bother me, but the CM thing sure did. Wonder how much he payed for that particular role?

Yep, just watch that episode! lol But they did atleast portray how *bad* dog fighting is and that it isn't the dogs fault. I really enjoyed that.

I'm on a Bones kick lately, too PW. :lol-sign: Where are you? I just started the fourth season. The end of the third and beginning of the fourth aren't great. I don't like what they do with two of the main charactors. Booth and Brennan need to go ahead and get the heck together. It's driving me insane. :rofl1:

Liz, I am in the very beginning of season 2, like episode 3 :p Don't tell my any secrets! lol
Two of my roommates are anthropology majors, they got me hooked on it.

I realize that it makes it more believable to the audience, it just irks me to no end. I'd rather they just didn't HAVE dogs as the bad guys. Problem solved. I remember a CSI episode where the vicious dog was *gasp* a GOLDEN RETRIEVER! Granted, it ended up having springer rage, but it showed that all goldens are not gods most perfectest dogs made evar!

That's what I did during that episode, too. I was disgusted, but the entire thing was so terribly cheesy that I couldn't do anything but laugh. The Dobe guarding the arm was cute, but when I think "resource guarding" it's not a Dobe that I think of...

In an episode of Dead Like Me, there's an APBT whose owner Daisy is talking to. They show a few close ups of the dog making the sweetest "please pet meee" face and sitting sedately beside her person, and then Daisy cheerfully asks, "so, aren't those the dogs that go crazy and kill people?" Right after that there's another close up of the dog's adorable face, and then I think Daisy walks off, but I found the entire thing pretty funny. A sweet, well-behaved, beautiful little dog that anyone would want to snuggle, and the first thing a character asks is if she's vicious. It's ridiculous.

Edit: this is also the show that portrays Golden Retrievers as The Perfect Family Dog For Everyone, and has a magically well-behaved golden that "always finds its way home," so I'm not sure why I'm surprised at the unrealistic stereotyping.

Yeah and they had mostly dogs that are not used for dogfighting. That episode really annoyed me but I still love that show.

I hate seeing Rottweiler's shown as aggressive in movies. My breed is still suffering greatly due to that type of portrayal in movies. With BSL still a very real threat, I hate fuel being added to the fire.

I cant think of any time its really bothered me like they flat out said such and such breed is evil etc. Usually its just a dobe or rott growling on most shows. I guess you just get used to that because who puts a lab growling on a show;)

I saw the boys from brazil at like ten and thats when I decided I liked dobes:lol-sign:
