is xerxes... how do i put it. how does he feel? like is he soft or is he like more smooth feeling or is his fur kind of rough? lol weird question but i've been wondering and i've never met a phaoroh hound in real life before
The pharaoh hound coat is a tight smooth coat. Xerk had a definite puppy coat of long, coarse hairs, long being 3/4 inch. The fur lies flat and as they mature it becomes a much tighter coat. Rub one way and it's smooth, rub the other direction and it's like sharkskin-it grabs you a little bit.
The girl I fostered had a soft, lush tight coat. Very different than Xerxes'.
Remember that they come from a rocky, dusty and sandy area. The coat has to protect them from getting sand next to their skin as well as protect them from the sun. They are perfectly adapted to life in a desert situation: Pink nose, lips, gums and foot pads. Their ears are large and when they get hot they shunt large amounts of blood to the ears, to cool off. This is why a hot PH has very pink ears. The quickest way to cool them down is to moisten their ears and let evaporation do it's work.
