it's not a bad thing to feed tuna, either canned or fresh. fresh tuna actually contains more mercury than canned "light" tuna.

but as julie mentioned, tuna tends to contain higher amounts of mercury and other toxins, so smaller fish like sardines or jack mackerel are actually a better, safer choice.

whether it will give a dog diarrhea or other digestive problems very much depends on the individual dog. it's generally a good idea to introduce new food items slowly and in small amounts. :)

You can always go for canned salmon, or fresh, it's pretty cheap. Plus you get the omega-3's. I give my dogs tuna too, but always make extra for them when salmon is served.
I heard a radio show about the mercury... they said that "farm raised" had MORE mercury than fresh caught... it was a pregnant woman asking how much fish and what kind of fish she can eat. They said 2 to 3 servings a week should be fine. I don't remember all the fish that has the higher doses of mercury.... swordfish... I know of.... Anyone who knows more, please post.

another advantage of wild caught salmon over farm raised is that farm raised fish are often treated with antibiotics, to prevent disease breakouts in the cramped conditions of fish farms. this, and pollution from he fish feed and of course the waste products of the fish make farming quite damaging to the environment.

bowowee - canned products are generally not in need of preservatives, since the canning process itself creates a sterile environment.

as for amounts - if you convert the EPA recommendations for humans by average weight, about one ounce of tuna per 22 pounds of body weight per week is considered as safe.

With Water Only

Tuna packed in vegetable oil tends to give dogs the runs. Packed in water does not seem to have the same problem.

My dogs love their tuna. They haven't had it for a while because I keep forgetting to get some cans of it. May absolutely loves fish.
