This is an excellent example of how to tug and how not to tug. I know one of those 'bad trainers' and she recently got bit very badly and she wouldn't listen. Thats what happens when you train for 'good enough' and that is how she trained, finally bite her in the a$$, pardon the bun.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzqs54qMgQA

Also when tugging with a young pup, let them tug, don't whip them around or pull hard which is when baby teeth can be pulled out.

Enjoy, I know I loved this video, its a riot.
:rofl1: great video for a morning laugh! :D

That was awesome. I know people who do that, too. I just got such weird looks from my coworkers not only for the strange noises coming from the computer in my office but also my gales of laughter.

Well......Personally i have Never played tug of War with Tater.....Especially in the beginning when you as well as the dog are figuring out there personality......I honestly do believe that it can bring on aggression....Especially with certain breeds....i know alot of people Do play tug of war with there dogs and everything is all good....But there is really no reason to play that game with them......Like i said before its up to you.....And especially if the breeder said you prolly shouldnt i would hold off on that one....I mean, she breeds the dogs, she would know.....Maybe Newfoundlands just dont know how to handle all the excitement and emotions that Tug Of War brings......

Hmm maybe you didn't read all the great replies in this thread.

Tug cannot 'bring on aggression' unless you have one very very messed up dog. Newfs are very laid back happy dogs.

Tug is a GREAT relationship builder with your dog. I recommend people play tug with puppies, with new dogs, with old dogs etc.

What tug does...
~Teaches the dog an appropriate way to play with humans (so often fixes dogs who grab pant legs etc)
~Tug is a co operative game played by canines in the family group so helps build relationships in a good way.
~Tug teaches boundaries and can be a great way to work on bite inhibition in puppies and older dogs.
~Tug can be a great reward when you want to work your dog in drive when training for competative sports such as agility, obedience, or flyball (hence why its is the first choice of reward by ALL top performance trainers around the world for all breeds)
~Tug can help build hind end muscles when done properly.
~Tug can aid in building confidence in an abused or timid dog.
~Tug can aid in teaching self control to extremely high drive dogs.

That is all I can think of for the moment.

If tug brought on aggression then pretty much all agility and flyball dogs would be very dangerous indeed :D

I don't think it will teach her to bite your legs, but I'd be careful playing tug with an aggressive/dominant dog, and always start/stop the game and make sure the dog understands the difference between playtime and real life, and can give the toy up on command.

I wish Summer would tug. She has no toy drive and it makes training a lot more difficult for her. Is there some way to build up toys to where she'll actually play with them? She ignores them all the time.

Actually all the dogs we've raised from puppies we tug with and they tend to be a lot more well rounded and very easily motivated. Tug is a great reward for Beau when training him. It's also really helped with his self control and controlling his insane toy drive. All our dogs are taught a 'Drop' command in which they know the game is over. The drop it command has really helped Beau not spazz out every time he sees a toy. No aggression whatsoever and no biting at hands/feet/anything. It's a great way to bond and play. Just keep it under control, which I find really easy.

A behaviorist we had come over a couple years ago told us tug-o-war is perfectly fine if you win the game. Meaning, YOU get the toy at the end and don't let go when playing unless you take the toy from the dog, not the dog taking the toy from you. That's worked pretty well with my dogs, although the Labs don't like to play it. Georgia loooves it though. & the rule worked wonderfully for Samwise, Layla didn't seem to be able to tell the difference! She'd grab your legs anyway.

no matter who wins, the game is over if one player lets go. if the reward is in the playing, what difference does it make who gets the tug?

Laurelin;
Susan Garrett has an excellent article on her website on building toy/tug drive.
www.clickerdogs.ca I think that is it off the top of my head, if it doesn't work just do a google on Susan Garrett.

Me, too, Laurelin. Millie doesn't have much tug/toy drive. She does play tug with Lucy sometimes, but seems reluctant to tug a toy I'm holding. It does happen though. :) I've been successfully building things up so she'll now go after a ball, but still loses interest quickly. That's okay with me, I just need to make the the sessons more "spur-of-the-moment" and even shorter.
Fabulous video posted! It was hilarious and reminded me SOOO much of people I know. XD
I have a very confident terrier mix and a "softer" Border Collie mix (I'm trying to use tug for Millie to help build her confidence), and I don't have any fears about playing tug with either. Lucy knows to drop it when I say so, that the game ends if she bites me or any article of clothing.
I hardly think tug will cause any aggression. I agree that I think of it as a communal game, not a "me vs. you" sort of thing.

Okie Dokie......I am Not Disagreeing with Most of what you said......And i am still sticking to my guns that if the dog has even the slightest dominence or aggressive issues tug of war will bring that out even more in the dog......I am not saying ALL dogs should not play tug of war and the game should be banned.....haha..... I am just saying that i have not played it was my dog and he knows whos in charge and is one of the most happpiest well behaved dogs i have ever met.......(could have to do with the training my Boyfriend is doing with him.....Tater is going to be a DUCK DOG)......And not to get everyone confused i am not saying he is like that because i Didnt play Tug of War with him.

I would also like to add that my brother just rescued a Dog named Woody....He is 3 months old now (we are pretty sure the he is a Chessapeake Bay Retriever) But he is a little spit fire and Very dominant for his age and Very mouthy and nippy......Luckily my brother is going to start a training program with him. (which hopfully helps). This dog looks like it will be 100ibls plus....and you put Very Dominant/and Hard headed and mouthy into the mix......Doesnt sound like to much fun......I know i have been rambling on and on.....But the point i was trying to make is....I was over at my Bros and he asked me what woody would do if he played tug of war with him.......So I said well go ahead and try it.....Instantly Woody start growling and making these weird ass noices jumping and showing his teeth.....i told my bro to get it away from him and make him sit.......Woody was more wound up then i have Even seen him and was jumping up on my bro growling and nipping.......Now you tell me, should Tug Of War be played with that dog?!? I have 2 words "OBEDIENCE TRAINING". :D

I work with dogs with domininace and aggressive issues frequently. Does not happen. Why do people working with breeds known for those issues use tug then?

Yes its ok if your dog growls and makes lots of noise :) thats all part of the game.

Did your brother teach him how to play tug, train any rules? Did the dog know 'out' or 'leave it'?

I teach obedience as well as compete. Yes DO train that dog to play tug!!! It will be great reinforcer for obed work.

Did you watch the video posted? Did you see the high degree of training that dog has? BC are known for 'dominance' and grabbing issues.

I don't agree with the dominant/aggressive thing either. My GSD is a dominant dog, and he can be VERY aggressive. Tug is one of his favorite rewards and we play it all the time. It's all about who controls the beginning and the ending of the game. Not what happens in the middle. I always let him win because tug is used as a way to develop a good bite. When he gives me a bite that I determine is a good one, he gets the tug. We'll do this over and over, and when the game is done, I tell him to out, and put the tug up. I can also do what that woman in the video did with him, it's not that hard when you have a dog who understands that to get what he wants, he has to comply.

Speaking of that video, who is that woman. She gave me the willies for some reason. Her body language and tone of voice just gave me bad vibes.

I got spewed this trash by the director of the Rescue I volunteer for last night. They have this gorgeous female APBT mix and she was begging to play tug. The whole time I was trying to walk her she kept trying to bite and tug the leash. So I went in and grabbed a toy that I could use as a tug well the lady saw me playing and training the rules with Annie and still made me stop. :( I felt so bad for her the whole time she was laying on the floor with me she kept trying to pick of the toy for me to play with her. Of course then she did the Pit Kissy Pin on me. :D How can someone running a all breed rescue be so clueless on what certain breeds thrive with. She kept telling me it would turn Annie aggressive because she too was growling. Then I went on to tell her that Walker does the same thing when I play with him but he is a total marshmellow and showed pictures of him and Bev and she told me that one day hes going to turn aggressive and hurt Bev :mad:

So silly. I agree with the other great replies..

I love playing tug of war, actually. :D I never played to much with Pepper, but I do like to play with my uncles Mastiff mix, Buddy, I am amazed at how strong he is, but how gentle he is also. :)
Its great.

Corgi the only thing I do have to warn you about is make sure you arent somewhere you can slip, or if you fall, hurt yourself LOL. Patches and I get seriously into the games of tug and there have been times her and I were playing and she caught me off balance or something and yea it hurts to fall then be jerked because of course you are always to preoccupied to say drop it  The fun of our giant breeds LOL.
