This is a dual question for you. Tuckers mother and another small dog were found running loose together in TN. At first I didn't really think the other dog could be his father but now I think he looks a lot more like him than like the mom. So my two questions for you are:
1. Do you think it's likely Captain is Tucker's dad?
2. What breeds do you think the parents are? (if you see anything other than Chi).
Obviously it's not important, just interested to hear your opinions.

Captain ("daddy")

Tenille (mom)

Both:

Tucker:

Yeah see that's why we didn't think Captain was the dad, there's gotta be something other than Chi there. I mean the mom's got a different curly tail going on, but other than that looks pretty darn Chi. Suppose other things could be in the parents, just not shown in them very much.

I thought Captain looked like he might have some Pug in him.

Tucker- for some reason I'm wondering if he has some long haired Dashshund in his mix.

I bet there's something other than Chi in both mom and dad, they just phenotypically look a lot like Chihuahuas. If they both carried some recessives, that would explain Tucker's longer coat and different body type. I do think he has his mama's head though. Cute family!

I think Captain might be a chi X pug, and Mom might be all Chi...can shorthaired chis have longhaired pups? Because I'd say Tucker is chi X pug if it wasn't for the longish hair.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone, doxie would certaintly explain his terrier like 'tude.

I'm not sure if shorthaired dogs can have longhaired pups, if short hair is recessive than I'd guess no, but I have no idea about that...he's not *really* long haired, but he's not smooth like those two either. The hair is getting less long though, he was much fuzzier when we got him and has grown smoother. Now his body is mainly short hair but his tail and behind the ears and back legs is long (the hair behind his legs is similar to my neighbors golden). I do wonder what he'll finally end up with hair wise, he's changed so much already, this was him on day one:

Can chihuahuas have tails like his mom has in the last picture of the two of them, it looks like a Shiba Inu tail.

Yes Chis can have tails like that...I'm not sure if they're supposed to, but they certainly can. I really don't see the doxie, mostly chi with some pug is my guess.

Long hair is recessive generally in animals. It's possible for two short haired dogs to produce a long haired puppy. How old is Tucker? He's probably just going through 'the uglies'. I bet he ends up with feathering. Mia went through a hairless phase, all longhaired dogs generally do.

He's just about 5 months old, 4 months in the pics. Mom said he got bigger since last time I was there though, I'll have to take more pics this weekend when I go home.

I know for a fact that two short haired Belgians can produce a long haired Belgian. And long hair (fluffy) in corgis is recessive. I don't know what the genetics are in chis.

Yeah he's hitting the uglies stage. Mia was pretty naked at 5 months old. I'm pretty sure long hair of that type is always recessive, but I'm not 100%.

Captian looks like a chihuahua pug mix IMO his face reminds me of a chi x pug cross. Mom looks like all chi to me.

Two short haired chihuahuas can produce a long haired chihuahua if their is a long coat chihuahua in their background. The long coat pups from two smooth parents sometimes have a differnt coat than one born from two long coats or even a smooth coat to long coat breeding.

Chihuahuas are supposed to have a terrier like temperment and some chihuahuas have a cork screw tail but they're not supposed to. Chihuahuas tails are moderately long, carried sickle either up or out, or in a loop over the back.

In Long Coats, the coat should be of a soft texture, either flat or slightly curly, with undercoat preferred on the body. Ears-Fringed. (Heavily fringed ears may be tipped slightly if due to the fringes and not to weak ear leather, never down.) Tail-Full and long (as a plume). Feathering on feet and legs, pants on hind legs and large ruff on the neck desired and preferred.
