I said goodbye to my beloved ferret Trunks this afternoon. He was nearly nine years old, which is a ripe old age for a ferret.
Trunks was given to me by my Hubby (then boyfriend) as a Valentine's Day present when I was in college. When I saw the cute little baby ferret the color of dark chocolate, I couldn't help but fall head over heels for him.
Trunks, along with my other two ferrets Krillin and Goku, were my college companions. Ferrets fit easily in a backpack, and I would often take one or more of them with me to campus. Many times I would be studying under a tree with Trunks snoozing in my lap. He was a spunky little guy, but very gentle. Even at the height of play-wrestling with me, he would never lay a tooth on me.
As the years passed, I lost Krillin to leukemia and Goku to a virus, both at tragically young ages. But Trunks was always with me, and accompanied me into married life. He still enjoyed to run around the computer room and play with me, even as he entered his senior years--although he was more content to cuddle than roughhouse.
Then Trunks developed adrenal gland disease. While treatable by surgery, it wasn't recommended that I put such an old ferret through the trauma. I debated about the possibility of medication, but Trunks let me know. He was so tired. It was time for him to go. So I took him to the vet to be PTS.
Goodbye, Trunks. I hope you're having a great time across the bridge, playing tag with your old buddies Krillin and Goku, the way you used to.
RIP.
