I brought my little puggle home last week and things are going well the first few days he was ok going into the crate and didn't really even cry except for a minute but last night he was off the hook. I don't know what got into him but any additional advice would be great. He also barks when he goes outside and leave him which is only after breakfast for about 10-15 minutes depending on whether or not he did his business when I was out there for the first 10 minutes. Thanks for anything.

Well, to start off, you have a beagle mix!!! This means that barking is now a part of your life. Beagles are very vocal, loud dogs. They are hunting hounds and this is a necessary trait. Looks like your dog ended up with the Beagle voice box instead of the pug's.

The best advice I can offer you is to ignore it and not give any type of reward to the behavior what-so-ever! This means that if your pup is screaming in his crate, you don't let him out or give him any attention until he is silent. Like I said, this will be a challenge since your dog is part beagle! As far as the barking outside, all I can recommend is that you don't leave a young pup unattended, ever, especially outside.

Good luck with your new baby...

I wouldn't leave him outside alone either. I take mine out on a leash and stay with him. I want him to know that this is all business and there is a time limit!! I don't want him to bark out there. I have neighbors close by. In the past, I had a neighbor who would let her dog out and go in and get ready for work. She would leave the dog out there barking for at least an hour at 6am. Needless to say, it caused a LOT of problems between is - I don't want to be that neighbor!!

Start really praising him and rewarding him for quiet times - those times when he is playing with a toy or just sitting quietly. Say "Good Quiet" and give him a treat. Make a big deal out of it. He will learn that quiet gets attention. Ignore the barking altogether - don't let him know it gets to you. Cover the crate, leave, whatever, but if he knows this gets to you he will use that knowledge!!

Don't just crate him when you are leaving. He will associate the crate with that. Put him in there sometimes when you are all home and active - put treats in there, a great toy, etc. Show him the crate can be a "happy place".

Hope this helps - it gets better...

this happened to me with my little puggle when i first got her.
i read some books and did as they said and totally ignored her when she would do it.
she eventually stopped. ive had her for a month and a half now and she hardly cries when crated. keep at it.

milo does that too, especially when i let him outside at night. i think he's afraid of the dark, and barks at shadows and whatever. as far as the crate/barking problem, just ignore him and he'll stop.
