The Heartworm Medication Trifexis Is Causing Dog Deaths
That would be the same ingredient that was used in Interceptor and is also used in Sentinel. Nobody ever flipped out over those two

If this is the case, dogs should be dying from Sentinel, too. And if it's not the milbemycin, but the spinosad, then dogs should be dying from Comfortis, too.

I find this interesting, but I'm not going to panic until I see some real news on it, instead of something from a spammy website with 6743523 pop-ups.

Any article that starts out with this: "There have been many reports this week of the heartworm drug Trifexis® being responsible for the deaths of 700 pets this year" without any cites or substantiation of any kind... not reliable right off the bat IMO.

We don't use or dispense Trifexis so no personal experience but this rumor gets re-circulated every once in awhile and every time it does people on the vet subscription sites all say they've never seen a death associated with it. The original incident that kicked it off was I believe 3 puppies from one litter who all died of myocarditis who had all received Trifexis within something like the previous 3 weeks prior to their deaths (all in different households by the time of their deaths IIRC). There have not been any other claims as far as I'm aware that Trifexis has been associated with myocarditis, and there are plenty of other explanations for myocarditis in 3 littermates... parvoviral myocarditis or a genetic heart defect to name two right off the top of my head.

Unfortunately when bad stuff happens, people look for something to blame, and people are very, very good at drawing correlations even if there's no evidence of causation. Dog with cancer died after getting Trifexis? It was the Trifexis! I wouldn't be afraid to use this in my dogs.

This. So frustrating. I had one lady come in with her new puppy and refused heartworm/flea prevention because her last two dogs died from Advantage Multi (or maybe it was Revolution... can't remember now). She had 2 goldens... a younger one and an elderly one. They died a week apart after receiving their first ever dose of Advantage Multi (or Revolution). The old one died of cancer. The younger one died of pancreatitis.

Me thinks just a really unfortunately coincidence. But nope. They were definitely killed by the drug and new pup is not getting heartworm prevention. Fortunately we are in a relatively low incidence area for heartworm. But there was no convincing her it wasn't the Advantage Multi (or Revolution).

I personally used Trifexis for Kili this year. I have used Sentinel in the past for Summit. I put my friend's dog on Trifexis this year as well, and had quite a few patients on it since Sentinel was off the market for the last 2 summers. Knock on wood but none of my patients have had anything happen. Worst case was one dog who kept vomiting his pill back up every month so we decided to change to topical.

I've used Trifexis on my dogs and I love it. It's too cost prohibitive for me to use, though. I never had any issues, and to my knowledge, no clients pets that have been on it have had issues - other than maybe some mild GI upset, which is a known SE.

^ What everyone else has said.

I've used Trifexis in the past. I'm currently using Sentinel for Abrams. No issues.

We use trifexis here, and recommend it at the vet I work for. Never had a problem. I do know that itshould not be given to dogs with a seizure history
