Hi guys. It's Cookie again. It's not a problem this time, more of a question.

I haven't seen a post that tackles this question, so I'm posting a new thread. Please redirect me if neccessary.

What are some treats you guys recommend? I've heard about cheese and peanut butter. Are there any brands that are better or harmful to dogs? I'm assuming that the cheese and peanut butter are for human consumption.

What about other nice, tasty alternatives for the puppy?

Thanks.

I like Natural Balance roll cut into tiny peices (very cheap too considering)
Charlie bears, home made liver treats. I just made the homemade salmon treat recipe someone mentioned here and it was a huge hit.
For a biscuit type thing I love the different ones made by the Naturapet company that makes Innova and Evo. My dogs love all of them-- the peanut butter ones smell good enough that I'm always tempted to try them.

For something really high value I'll use tiny peices of weiner cut up.

How about bits of kibble? How young is the puppy?

THere are Zuke's Mini Naturals, hmm, we use Natural Balance Food Rolls and cut it into small pieces.
She's 3 months plus.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, we do not have an oven and most homemade treats require baking. I think I need recipies that doesn't require baking! Lol.

Btw, are there any common human-food brands that we should all avoid (i.e. may be/is harmful to our companion)?

Some people use cheese or hot dog, cut into very small pieces also. I have used cheese on rare occasions but never any other "human" food.

The NB food roll is good. It can be refridgerated and can last a long time. :)

Brands dont really matter. With the peanut butter you want to try and find an all natural variety, as the regular JIF or skippy types have too much sugar in them for dogs.

When i was training my first dog I used the KRAFT american singles that are individually packaged alot. But really any cheese works.

I was told by a dog trainer that if I want to give my dog peanut butter, get him the sugar free peanut butter. Don't take my word for it though. Maybe Mordy can chime in.

While I'm definitely not a big fan of "Wellness" brand foods, they did come out with two lines of really nice new treats - "WellBites" and "PureRewards".

Anyone have an opinion on those treats that you bag yourself and weigh at the Petsmart store? We just used a coupon for a free pound. The treat we picked out was 15% protein and 5%fat.

I believe you mean PetCo...This is where I have seen it.

The treats in those tubs are mostly junky quality. Basically on the same level as a MilkBone or something similar.

In my opinion anyway.

Check out the ingredient lists before you buy. Some of that stuff is pretty nasty.

I raise Yorkies and Mini Dachshunds. My vet said to give them Cherios for a treat. Said they are full of good carbohydrates and little sugar. They are tiny and easy for puppy mouths to handle. Plus they love them.

It appears that this (doggie) peanut butter I bought causes Cookie to have watery poo. While it's not confirmed, we're trying to see if it really causes it. Maybe it's too rich?

It's called kong's stuff'n.
