Labs are usually pretty poor watch dogs. They don't look menacing to anyone. I have seen labs who will guard, kinda, on occasion. If you were thinking of tying your dog to your bags, forget it. Tied dogs get stressed very easily and the dog could bite someone. As a visitor you have whatever rights the government there decides to let you have. What if someone takes the dog? What if the dog gets a botfly? What kind of vet services will you have available? Will you be able to search for the dog if it goes missing?

As much as I would love to take my dog to exotic places, I think it's a mistake because the dog wouldn't be safe.

thank you for your worries about the safety of my dog, but you can rest assured' machuca is absolutly safe. in fact she is much happier traveling around with me here than at the house in the states. we have the opportunity to spend much more time together than we do in the states. Also, to all whom may wonder, vets are ample in latin countries, and best of all' affordable! and of course they are easily as qualified as in our own :) respective countries.

i aggree, labs are not the best guard dogs, due to their obvious affinity with us humans, however down here people tend to respect the space of dogs, if i could teach her how to stay with a bag, it would have my full confidence that it would be safe....

we have tried to leave her with a bag of manderins when we go into a church (for example) and she waits patiently for us, but does not even notice the bag.... regardless of what i say to her.

thanks for the imput, i look forward to more.

hablas su espanol? me hablar a little espanol. if she has it in her to protect you, she might protect your bags, but if not then don't try.

if she does have it in her to protect you, teach her to bark on command, then associate barking with strangers approaching the bag, then start rewarding her whenever she barks in response to someone trying to get your bags and voila.
