She will probably get sick from not eating. What I would do is bring a ew mile bones of whatever to give her after your on, so she doesnt get sick.

You guys are great. Ok. I will fast her 24 hours period may be she will drop a pound or so. But do you guys think its healthy for her not to eat for 48 hours period . My plane ride is 19 hours. I wont able to feed her in the plane or right before , what if her stomach gets sick if i do? or she goes potty in the kennel. Not that i mind, but could she survivve not eating 48 hours without getting sick . Do you guys think its healty to starve her 48 hours then??
of course if they let me to take her with me in the cabin....i got exited for a while and start thinking about other stuff now...
whoa, i never thought of the potty thing...how does that work?? wouldnt that start to smell pretty nasty???

Do you mean they didnt weigh your cat at all ??or only the carrier?
Neither. :) I purchased the carrier from the airline directly, so I guess they knew the weight. I just checked in, they weighed my suitcases, but not the cat carrier.

A healthy dog can be fasted much longer than 48 hours without any problems at all. However, I wouldn't completely fast her prior to flying, but feed her just a little bit, not the usual portion you give for a meal.

Dogs do get motion sick just like people, so both an empty and a full stomach can pose a problem.

I flew with Delta, and at the time their limit was actually 5 kg (11 pounds).

If you are significantly over the limit, I would really recommend booking him in cargo, that way you will at least be sure that you both get on the plane. Otherwise you might not even be allowed to board at all and lose the money.

There is no law about constantly bugging a stewardess at every plane change to confirm that your dog is on board, otherwise you simply refuse to board yourself. They have walky-talky contact to the baggage handlers, so they can get up-to-date information at any time.

Follow Redyre's advice for securing and labeling the crate and it should really be fine.

If she's in the cabin and goes potty, you can take her into the toilet for a quick clean up. After you check her in you can start giving her some snacks.

Only comment I'd like to add is bring paper towels, as the aircraft might not have been refilled with them before departure.

My first thought is exactly the same as the post above me. Try a soft sided pet carrier. It should weigh less than the typical crate. You should be able also take her regular crate "as baggage". I also think the fasting thing sounds like a great idea, not only for sickness..but for potty issues since over a 20 hr period she won't get a lot of chances. She's a shih tzu and if she's like mine, she has amazing HOLD IT powers, that I just can't imagine are good for the dog..but it's a fact jack! I'd go with the smallest soft sided dog tote you can find! She's only 7 lbs!
