I really need some help and quick, I could use all advice given. My family has a Walker Treeing Coon Hound. Now there has been a lot of controversy in this house over the dog, which is my fault, I just had to have a dog and I finally convinced my mom to get me one. It's hard to explain everything but I convinced my mama I would take responsibility of the dog, her name is Daisy, my mom wanted me to do research on dog breeds and how to train them and keep them happy and all the stuff a responsible dog owner should know. I've had dogs before when I used to live with my dad and I truly loved them, but I was taught how to train a dog the old way which turns out to be the wrong way.
Well I rescued daisy because I love coon dogs and she was the same breed and had the same markings as my old dog Johnny who i could no longer see since me and my father didn't talk and he also sold Johnny. Johnny was an outside dog, he was rough, aggressive, protective, and super smart. But he was trained by a damn beating and even though he loved my dad he feared his every move. My mama refused to let Daisy be trained that way especially since she was an older dog. ARF the local rescue told us she was around 7 years old. Well we took her home and me and Daisy just did not click, she didn't listen, I had no idea how to train a dog and still don't. I refused to accept her as part of the family and i just walked around like a senile old man mumbling to myself about the dog, "Fucking dog, won't God damn listen, stupid motherfucker. Hate this damn dog." and that was how I felt towards her, she would use the bathroom every where wouldn't want you to pet her, I was tired of cleaning up massive 5 pound dog turds and a gallon of piss everyday. I dumped the dog off on my brother and gave up all responsibility to the dog.
Now as time has passed I've grown to love and accept Daisy as part of the family and feel bad for how I treated her. My mom is still convinced and hate the dog and don't care if she just disappeared but that's not the case. She is a very sweet, loving, kind, free spirited dog. There's no way you can hate her unless you were the embodiment of of hatred. She has picked up herself on what is and is not accepted in our house and what we expect of her, even though I bend the rules for her a lot and completely disregarded some my mama wanted like she wasn't allowed on the couch. The problem still remains though is she isn't very well trained to some things such as a leash, a harness, a collar, staying in the yard, not barking and howling at the cats. But also for anyone that knows a coon hound then you know it isn't there personality to stay in one place and not tree and bark at small animals. We live in the country surrounded by cows and fields off a highway, we only own the one acre of land our house is on and the rest is my step papa's brothers daughters land she inherited after her father, Lyman, died a short while back. Her husband Jeff is a good man and he raises meat cows on the land. He doesn't mind Daisy but his wife freaks out and she always complains to Jeff to talk to us about keeping daisy inside or put up. It's a lot harder than they think, if you so much as don't close the door all the way she will open it and leave, if you're leaving in the morning she will dart out past you quicker than you can blink, and once she's out there is no calling her back or chasing her down she comes back on her own time. We don't believe in not giving her any freedom, but we don't want her to get hit by a car or shot.
Deer season opens tomorrow and people hunt on this land out here and they don't have a problem shooting a barking dog. But we are very busy right now and some days we might not get home till 8 O' clock, and if you leave Daisy inside all day she drags out the trash and chews on anything. We believe she has really bad separation anxiety and it's worse if she's stuck in the house alone all day rather than outside. Plus usually I just leave the door open for her to come in and out as she pleases so she won't get thirsty and hopefully she won't roam too far and she will just come back home and settle down inside. We are having a difficult time trying to find out what to do. She hates a runner and will slide right out of a collar of any kind because her neck is bigger than her head, we tried harnesses but she just turns right around and chews through the shoulders and gets out of them, we went through so many harnesses Walmart said we can't return them no more.
