i've been wanting a pup from my cousin's litter since before they were born. they're about 3 1/2 weeks old now, and i've taken a special liking to one. a brown female with spots. she's the sweetest thing.. she's so calm, willing to sit nicely on my lap while the rest of the litter are running around like crazy, and if i snap my fingers and say 'come here baby' in a nice/excited voice, she'll run right over to me. anyway, my cousin's dad said, that they're taking them to the pound this weekend [they'll be four weeks old :( >.> ], so if i want her, i'd better take her home now. i convinced them to keep mine until she's 5 weeks, but they're still getting rid of the others this weekend. i'm torn... backyard breeding = wrong, separating pups from their mom that early = wrong... but ahg, she's just the sweetest thing. and the amazing part of it is, my mom told me that she's noticed i've been much more responsible the last few months with our other dog, and she would be fine with me getting this pup. for her to say that, is like... crazy.

i'm so confused.

I don't see anything wrong with taking her if you can financially take care of this puppy and be responsible for it's every need. BYB-ing isn't right but if the pups will end up at the pound anyway and this person isn't asking for compensation for them, so if you have the time, energy, heart, responsibility, and money for this pup I don't see why you shouldn't take her.

That being said, a puppy should NEVER be separated from it's mother until 8 weeks of age. I didn't even know the shelters would take pups younger than that!!

Gee, it's bad enough they back yard bred with no plan for the puppies, but truly, the least they could do is give these puppies a chance by letting them wean at the proper age! They brought these puppies into the world and now they want to dump them before they even have a decent immune system. Can you please talk them into doing the more responsible thing so that these puppies have a better shot at life?

I know it's probably a long shot, but is there any way you could take in the mother and puppies until they're weaned? Obviously the people don't want them if they're taking them to the pound . . .

Or perhaps find someone who is willing to do that until they're at least 6 weeks old? 8 is definitely better, but not always possible with cases like this.

Agggh, some people make me so angry!

Why was this persons dog bred in the first place?

You know what I'm going to do? I'm going to have a bunch of babies, and drop them off at a shelter. LOL, a little dramatic, but you get the idea. If I knew the person, I'd smack them :D hehehe

you really arent encouraging them to be BYBs if there is no money involved...so i wouldnt feel bad about it...the wrongdoing is on THEIR part for being irresponsible...not yours

you would be the responsible one for taking in a puppy in need of a home, and giving it the life it deserves!!!! Hopefully you can convince them to keep them till at least 8 weeks (like everyone else said )

i tried, no luck =( i'm going to take the one pup tonight [i found out that they're 5 weeks old today, instead of 4], and they're giving four of the others to friends of theirs. that leaves 2 homeless pups. my cousin and i are going to try to find a couple of our friends to take the last two tonight, but his dad's taking them to the pound tomorrow if they aren't gone. i'd like to take the mother and pups [they aren't getting rid of the bitch, just the puppies, and they're having her spayed. this was an accidental breeding, the neighbors dog jumped the fence. mom is pretty young, so they hadn't had her spayed yet. ] until they're old enough, but we're only allowed 3 dogs max in our apartment, so i can't.

Wow, those puppies are going to be in for a world of confusion being taken away from their mother and siblings this young. How unfortunate for them.

You're in for a lot more than a "cute puppy".

-Socialize like crazy, but make sure you don't endanger the puppy's small frame or health.

-Good luck with potty training. You will need it. Let us know if you have any questions.

-How are you going to prevent separation anxiety?

we've raised a young puppy before, on goats milk. she turned out one of the best dogs we've ever had. we're hoping to make something of a surrogate mother out of my current [older] dog. she loves puppies, and while she can't supply milk, obviously, she can help us love her and teach her the do's and don't of being a dog ;] it's a pretty good situation for us at the moment, because the dogs won't be alone at all during the day, with how our schedules are. and with thanksgiving and christmas coming soon, i'll have long breaks from school when i have all day to spend with the dogs. this will be difficult, but it'll be worth it in the end. =] i'll probably making quite a few 'help me!' posts here on chaz in the next couple months. ;]

This is making me so angry... How lame, irresponsible and stupid to get rid of them so early... it's their own fault they bitch was unattended outside while in heat  Now I just hope the pups won't end up being PTS or something because of lack of socialization... Gosh sometimes I hate people.

Kudos to you though, I can't wait to see pictures of the puppy. I hope the others will be as lucky.

It sounds like you're making the best of a poor situation, at least for your puppy. Good luck and don't be afraid to ask any questions!

That is so sad :( I wish that more people would spay and neuter their pets, so situations like this don't happen :(
I'm glad that you took one of the puppies. I hope the others all find homes as well.
