We had a family party on Sunday and our 1 year old Havanese was having a blast with all the kids, but then one of the girls mentioned Kiku was bleeding. It looked like she tore her dewclaw, so we put some septic on it until it stopped bleeding. She was probably bleeding for at least an hour b/c when I looked at it is was bright red (we didn't believe the 4 year old when she first told us about the dog bleeding). Kiku has been OK, but she really starting licking yesterday and I looked at her paw today. It looks like it's turning black where the nail was. It appears that it is the skin that is discolored, not a remaining nail.

Has anybody dealt with this before? Should I bring her in to see the vet? Put a sock on it?

Thanks!

I'd definitely see your vet. Had that happen to my dog, took her to the vet, they removed the torn nail, got the bleeding stopped, bandaged her up and that was it. She was good as new in a day or two and grew a new nail within a few weeks.
