Short haired or long haird dogs? What's your preference?

I love Alaskan Malamutes, but HOT DAyMN do they ever shed garbage bags at a time :p

I have a short haired dog but the bad thing about his hair is when he goes through the season changes and he sheds really badly. Well because they are short they stick into things. Not easily lifted out of things like the carpet and the couch lol.

I love fluffy dogs they are so pretty. But, I prefer to have short haired dogs.
However, the fall is not wonderful for dogs with short hair. They shed little needles. But you never have to worry about them matting, or taking them to a groomer on a regular basis.

I love my coated breeds and always will, but there is definitely some appeal in having a "naked" breed.. Where I live, short coated dogs get along so much better than the guys with a big ol' coat weighing them down.

I like in between. Fluffy enough that there's enough fur for you to sink your hands into and have fun grooming, but not so long that it gets tangled and matted easily. In other words I love my Sibe coat which is very similar to a GSD coat.

My lab has short hair but sheds piles....my terrier mix has short hair that goes everywhere and is not easily caught in a brush, and my border collie mix has some long hair and some short hair, that can be caught in a brush and that gets all over!!!

I loved brushing and combing my golden retreiver. She did give off quite a lot of hair. I'd take off wads of hair duing grooming, but she'd still be shedding.

Now I have Zeus. I assumed that, being a short-haired dog, it would be easier to maintain his coat. Now, I have a dog who sheds like crazy, but the hair is too short to pick up with any kind of brush or slicker *sigh*.

I like the medium haired ones...I can run the zoom groom over the floor after I'm done brushing them and it cleans up all the hair that fell off.

All dogs shed ...Yes I get tons from my goldens and gather up. My grand-labs scattered their short hairs hither and yon .....my long ago Boxer shed a hair that decided to imbed into my foot causing a major infection and a lot of pain. Don't we love our furry friends !

On a sidenote, dog hair does have its uses. I met a lady at a craft fair who was a groomer. Her hobby was to gather up the dog hair, spin it into yarn and make scarves and sweaters out of it. She had scarves of poodle, golden retreiver, schnauzer, etc. I'd never buy one, but she had a lot of customers who wanted a scarf to match their dog.

When I brushed our golden retreiver, we always gave the handfuls of soft fluff to my sister's gerbil. The gerbil loved the stuff, it was his absolute favorite to nest with.

I started to save for a scarf or something then gave up . I always do put a bunch of hair in one of those onionbags in the spring for the birds..... hang it outside and what grand nesting for them !

That reminds me of something I saw on TV... a women made hats, scarfs, etc. out of her Newfoundland's' fur!
