Today while I was waiting to pick my dd up from school, I witnessed a parent backhand her child across the face  This poor kid was terrorized by this woman--and there were a bunch of adults standing there!

I stewed about it all afternoon, and I just couldn't get the image out of my mind, so I called and reported the incident.

It won't fix the problem immediately, but at least I can sleep tonight knowing that someone is going to be looking out for this poor child :( I just hope his weekend isn't He11.

I'm going to give extra hugs to my kids tonight, and make sure they know I love them! I cannot fathom ever hitting my child across the face like that!

Good for you, LorriF. You did the right thing by helping that kid.

Ya know what?If my mom was like that, which she isnt, she is very nice, well, I would do the same thing to her and use some karate moves on her, and then run away screaming "MURDEROR!"

Wow, lol I can't image Americans living in the west indies. Parents hit you with extension cords, branches of trees (with the leaves), shoes, beat you down while you're taking a shower, wet towels, shoot, even the teachers hit you!

I'm quite sure they aren't aiming for the head though. Makes a HUGE difference!!!

wait, how is slapping a child in the face bad? I've seen that all the time... that's just another way of disciplining your child

Not at all...and least of all, not in a cold and calculating manner. I would never dream of using a slap in the face as a means of disciplining either of my kids and I have a very low opinion of people who would use that as a form of discipline.

How humiliating for the child - what an awful bully the Mom sounds. Good on you for doing something about it.

Yeah some of them do slap their face, whats the difference between getting hit in the face, legs, or bottom? They also pull hair, and sometimes drag you across the floor.

But now the kid will probably have to go into foster care and be separate from his mother, whom he or she probably cares about a lot. Kids have gotten worst beat downs in public and unconditionally love their mothers and would never call no child services on them, they knew they shouldn't have done what they did and they know the punishment. Just like a person who fights his pits, that dog loves his owner no matter what cruel torturement it receives.

Backhanding a 5 year old is unacceptable--the child wasn't even misbehaving! Plus, she had a handful of rings on, and it left a huge mark across the child's face--I can't imagine what he looked like later.

What she did wasn't even done in "the heat of the moment"--I could see (although not condone) a mother "losing it" and doing something which she later regretted and knew was wrong. This mom was cold and calculating, and made further threats regarding what she was going to do to him when she got him home. The fear, and helplessness in this child's face was heartbreaking.

Just because the child loves his mother doesn't mean she can treat him the way she does. Family and Children's Services here in Canada will make every effort to help the family before removing the child from the home, but if they decide that is the thing to do then it is neccessary for the safety of the child.

Child abuse leaves lasting scars on people throughout their lives--and not just physical ones.
