She was the runt of the litter so she is not very big about 5-6lbs tops and she was thinner when i got her. She's also 9wks so yes she would be only getting a cup check the chart again...
there is no way a GSD/Lab mix is 5-6 lbs at 9 weeks...Im sorry but its true..

I have a GSD/lab and at 9 weeks she was 19 lbs...

Delisay is right you should at least be feeding at least 2 or more cups a day NOT one.....

That dog is soo skinny, because she is not being fed enough!

I am not trying to be rude, obviously if you were intentionally starving your dog, you wouldnt have come on here in the first place. Everyone realizes you want to do the right thing and we are just trying to help you.

Please up that puppies food intake. Dont go based on the pups current weight if she is super skinny, go based on what she SHOULD weigh.

Let that girl EAT and I bet she will put weight on!

Good Luck

ok on 10/4/06 you said she was 8 weeks. So that would make her 11 weeks now. She doesn't look 5 pounds but the chart for 5-10 pounds at her age says 1 1/3- 2 1/4 I would be feeding her the max for her weight and age.... 2 1/4 a day.

Puppy Palace,

I wouldn't get too upset. In a healthy dog you SHOULD be able to FEEL the ribs not SEE the ribs.

I would up her food anyway based on her breed, age, and size, like the others said. You can always cut it down if she begins to get a little chubby. I find food charts confusing sometimes - so many things to take into consideration. You could always try to put her on a scale if you have a human scale at home - this would give you an idea of her current weight if it is not time for a vet visit. Also, they would probably let you come in and weigh her for free.

I would try these things first. If she is otherwise healthy, I don't think you need to shell out for a visit to the vet just yet. If things don't improve, though, you may want to reconsider the vet.

Not a chance the pup in those pictures is 5-6 lbs. Sorry. Forget about the chart for now and increase the food to twice what you have been feeding. If she gets chubby then cut her back. All dogs have different energy requirements and some require a lot more to keep weight on...

PP, I was trying to help by estimating for you how much she needs, because I wondered if you were having trouble understanding the chart and had made an innocent mistake.

Now I am worried that you have not even looked at the chart. Even if her ideal weight was really only 6lb (which others have noted is unlikely for her breeds, and she looks bigger) ... and even if she were only 9 weeks and not 11 ... that's still about 1.5 cups - 50% more than you have been giving her.

Please try her on 2.25 cups as is the general concensus here - or even just 2 cups until you can see your vet for more advice.

(The chart indicates that at her age 1 cup is only sufficient for a 3lb pup!!)

Del.

Please keep in mind that you'll want to feed the pup for its desired target weight if it is not at ideal weight already. If you continue to feed only enough to support the current weight, the dog won't receive enough nutrition to gain.

At an estimated adult weight of around 70-75 pounds and a current ideal weight of about 10 pounds, this dog should be eating around 800 kcal per day, adjusted up or down for individual needs.

That would mean about 2 1/3 cups of the Chicken Soup regular puppy food, or 2 1/2 cups of the large breed puppy formulation.

Please don't make the mistake of feeding the increased amount right away though, or your puppy might end up with an upset tummy. Increase the amount you feed per meal a little bit over a period of several days.

It sounds like you may be guessing on the pups's weight because you said "no more than 5-6 lb tops" instead of specified weight. Guessing on weight to determine how much to feed is dangerous. Do you have a PetsMart nearby? Most PetsMarts have a Banfield Vet, and you can stroll right in and stick your dog on the scale at no charge. I do that on a regular basis with my two. My corgi puppy at 12 weeks old weighed 11.5 lbs - almost twice as much as you're saying your large breed puppy at the same age weighs... >o.o< He ate 2 cups of Canidae per day at that age.

No need for a trip to the vet to weigh a dog if they are light enough to be picked up by a person comfortably! :)

Just weigh yourself first on a "people scale", then weigh again carrying the dog and substract your own weight from that.

I even weighed my dane like that until he was about a hundred pounds. :)

this is what I do, I wouldn't suggest going to the petsmart scale with a puppy, too many things they can catch

The pet store isn't over 30mins away so i won't make coutined trips to see how much she weighs like i said she is the runt and have been increasing the food. I'll see how it goes i keep forgetting her age i can't keep track of everything. I did look at the chart and i'm going to take a picture so you guys can see how much it says to feed it doesn't say 2 cups.

Also i feed my alaskan 5 cups of Dads Dog Food a day i know you want to jump on that. She's not really thin she is fine i'm not giving her outragous amounts of food because her weight i go by how thin she looks. I came on because my puppy is thin not to get a lecture on how to feed a animal.

That makes no sence. You are contradicting yourself. You say that you came on because your dog was too thin. But then you say that you did not come on here to be told how to feed an animal....This makes no sence because the reason your dog is too thin, is becasue you obviously don't know how to feed her. I haven't noticed anyone being rude in telling you this. They are trying to help you. And your dog.

I had a super thin foster and I fed her puppy food instead of regular adult food and that helped her gain weight. It definitely wasn't a quick gain, but it worked.
