i am trying to get my cavy to lose about 3 pounds (he's 28, i'd like him to be 25, since he is a bit big-boned for his breed).

i am feeding him canidae ALS but i was wondering if it would be better to feed him more on the Canidae Platinum food or feed him less on the Canidae ALS?

Also, is it best to do as the website recommends, feeding 25% canned and 75% dry food?

All of the Canidae food is ALS.

If you'd like to try the platinum and see if it works, I don't foresee a problem but I'd try just lowering what you're giving him now and increase exercise if possible. I feed Canidae and our Dobe has lost weight with the Lamb & Rice (ALS) by doing just that. He gets 2 1/2 cups in total a day. How much are you feeding your cav? You don't usually have to feed a whole lot with this food.

As far as the canned thing goes, I give them canned with their kibble sometimes but not usually. I do add water to their kibble though to make it easier to digest.

I think you should drop him down to 1/2 cup per day total and stick with the standard Canidae All Life Stages formula. The Platinum has a lot of carbs and low protein so it may not even help with weight loss.

Are you sure he's only supposed to drop down to 25 pounds? Right now, he's 10 lbs. over breed standard!

By the way, in addition to decreasing his food intake you should up the amount of exercise he gets. How much do you walk him?

well he's really big for his breed. his dad was a cavy bigger than the standard, and same with his mom. he has thicker bones than the average cavy.
