I just received and invite to a petition on facebook for the banning of flying puppies to homes. Because of the 7 puppies that died. So they want to ban all puppies from flying unless they are acompanied by a person. In this way they are hoping to stop puppy mills.

Here is what I wonder though. Yes it could affect the puppy mills but what about the respectable breeder? It is not always possible to fly with each puppy to its new home or even to have the people fly in to pick it up. This was the case with Sheena's litter. One pup (donated one that became a Service Dog) flew alone into the States. Another one was flown to BC. I had met the adopter a week earlier when he came for the meet and greet but could not make it for a second flight to get his pup. So he also flew unacompanied to his home.

To me this is another one of those situations where to punish the bad you are also affecting the good as well. But what are your thoughts?

I think its a horrible Idea. How will it stop dogs from dying? Alot of the times the puppies are in cargo regardless of if they are flying with someone.

If you cant fly dogs, then most people will not have access to quality dogs and breeding programs would suffer.

The dobe pup I want in a year (ish) is comming from Texas. She is allready $2400us. That will be stretching my budget. Now, how am I supposed to afford to fly down myself, plus hotel, and fly back? Or is the breeder suposed to take the time to fly?

Horrible, horrible idea. If they ban puppies, what about dogs? What if people need to fly a dog somewhere, either for working, show, or even relocating (family is moving) purposes? What if someone wants to import a puppy from overseas? What if they want to purchase from a breeder that is clear across the country?

IMO, banning flying puppies isn't going to do very much of anything to stop puppymills but is going to do a heck of a lot of damage towards reputable breeders and even people just trying to move with their animal.

Nope, totally unnecessary law. Not worth the supposed benefit anyway.

Those are my thoughts exactly but I seem to be banging my head against a brick wall with the person who posted the link.

if you want to stop puppy mills, educate people about responsible puppy purchasing and enforce the animal cruelty laws already on the books. it has nothing to do with airlines.

every time something bad happens people seem to leap straight to BAN EVERYTHING!!!! it's ridiculous.

it's probably driven by PETA or some similar group opposed to dog ownership period.

If they ban dogs from cargo hold areas on planes the people will just resort to hot trucks which could take days to cross the country making it worse than it is now.

I would never support that, it's ridiculous. With that said...

I don't/won't ship puppies cargo. Period. I am not against shipping, I have done it (not with pups however) under certain circumstances.

I think banning flying dogs would help byb and puppies mills a ton. If people couldn't ship a dog, they'd be looking closer to home and many times they'd settle for a pet stores or byb because they couldn't get a dog from a good breeder.
