Hi everyone
I need help for my sister who 2 weeks ago switched her Boxer (90 pound) and Boston (25 pounds) over to EVO Red Meat. She needs help with the amounts she should be feeding them.
Upon speaking to her when she started them out she was feeding the Boxer 3 1/2 cups so she reduced it to 3 cups (1 1/2 cup twice a day)and still has black gooey poops and this was a week ago. The
Boston started with 2 cups and is now down to 1 cup a day( 1/2 cup twice a day). He too has black gooey poops. She said she also uses Animal Essentials plant enzymes and probiotics in their food and was using this prior to changing foods.
They both came off of Solid Gold food.

Both dogs are very active. Is she feeding too much yet and this is why their poops are black and gooey her discription of course? I could have sworn she told me they had a green hint to them too.

Any thoughts would be great

Thanks
Bucket

If the dogs are 'detoxing' then this could be normal. I would monitor weight gain/loss to determine amounts. What were the dogs eating before?

It could be the richness of the EVO. My dogs didn't really have stool problems when they were switched from Canidae to EVO, but I've heard a lot of stories about dogs having loose stool issues when switching (that usually goes away in time).

Little Tallulah is having some, errr, interesting stools now that she's with me and eating EVO RM. They were firming right up after a couple of days . . . until my mother decided - while we were visiting - to give her a bowl of Purina One

Sounds to me like your sister's dog is detoxing, Bucket. And I'd think about adjusting those quantities DOWN a little more. Even Kharma - at 125 pounds, only eats 3.5/4 cups of EVO RM a day, if that much.

Renee, how old is Tallulah?

If she's a pup, I wouldn't feed her Evo. The calcium/phosphorus ratios are off for puppies in Evo and can cause bone growth issues and joint problems.

I know that's true of large breeds, Becca, but I wasn't too worried about it with her, as she's 7 months old (still relatively a baby, I know). I'm also adding additional raw and cooked stuff to equalize it some for her.

And she's quite the accomplished little beggar on top of it, lol! Not to insistent, which is what makes her so effective :D

I got warned when I switched Buster that his poo's could go yucky but they didn't, I think its because his kibble is only about 1/3 of his diet and the raw meant his body was already running pretty well.

Amounts depend very much on the individual dog.

Sophie (36kg) gets 2 cups for breakfast plus 1/4 - 1/2 kilo raw a day because she drops weight faster than we can get it on.

Harry (27kg) gets 3/4 cup of kibble and about 300g of raw
he has a very slow metabolism, gains weight at the wsight of food but is constantly hungry and cranky when he isn't full, he's very difficult.

Buster (21KG ) gets 1/2 cup kibble and about 1/4 kg raw.
He really self monitors his diet, he sometimes skips a meal or only eat a small amount of it.

Mac (11kg) about 1/2 kibble (she doesn't liek it much) about 1/4 - 1/3 kg raw a day
she has a very fast metabolism and burns energy at every chance she gets

Is Innova Evo really a bad food for puppies? I have been feeding our Boston the "small bites" bag, yellow in color, since she was 3 months old. She is now going on 6 months and seems to be doing very well with it, but I have heard that you should feed a puppy food so I'm not sure. Any advice would help, thanks.

You shouldn't feed EVO to a large breed puppy, but if your dog is the Boston in your avvie, you should be ok.
