One should ALWAYS go for a highest education possible. Everyone's situation and personality is unique, so the fact that others do or do not regret because they don't have a college degree doesn't mean that you should not go for yours, or that it'll grarantee you will not regret not going for it later.

If you notice, most of those who say they don't regret are SAHMs - that's because right now they're having the best job possible: being a mom.. and do not have to compete with anyone else in the job field. However, it may change if in the future they have to return to the work force when their children are growing up. Of course, they can always return to college and get their degree if they want, and whenever they want to. Actually - beside freedom, this is the next BEST thing about the U.S.A!!, but that's beside the point.

As far as I know, one WILL regret not having a college degree specially when he/she is working at a company, and have to fact the reality that someone else doing basically the same thing as they do can have a higher salary just because the person has a degree while they don't. It's much easier to find higher salary jobs and to advance in your career when you have a college degree.

So, I'd say go for it!. The sky is the limit when it comes to education & the higher the better!

LOL M&M....I have always worked retail, right on up thru management and loved it. I plan to do the same once they both go to school this year. My working is supplemental...not required...it's to keep me busy...nothing more.

We've done the math...even if dh got laid off...we'd be fine financially for quite a long time...

BOOKSTORES RULE!

Of course there is exception for every rules. In fact, some of the most famous gazillionaires in the world are college drop-outs :) But in general, I stand by my post, lol.

I work for a pharmaceutical that will only hire people with at least a bachelor degree. I guess we all post from our own experience .

Same here... except for the going back to work this year thing.

I don't want to be stuck in an office... not my thing. I want to deal with people and retail is what I like.

If I had to go back to work I would probably go right back to retail. I have worked other types of jobs before... my most lucrative job was a tech support agent... no college required. However I hated it. so I would never go back unless I had to. Jewelry and beads is where my heart lies now lol. So I would most likely be looking for something in that field... home shows, making my own and selling it or working in a store.

BUT.... what we REALLY hope to be doing in the not too distant future is dairy farming... plans are in the works :D

But if I had to go back into the work force I am confident that I would have no trouble at all. I've only been a SAHM for 11 months... unless things have drastically changed I won't have an issue. My experience in retail and my attitude makes up for any "lack" of schooling. they can teach how to count cash but they can't teach you how to be personable and good with customers... you either have it or you don't lol.

BUT that being said... I am glad that my husband went to college although he's not working in the field of his degree (history). and I would like for Hannah to go to college... but I have some time before I need to worry about that lol.

These days degrees seem to have less value overall as well, unless they are a certain kind. Read an article about that not long ago. Like with anything...more more more is required to get the same jobs as before...more and more out of reach for folks...

I'm a college drop out... don't regret it honestly. I'm lucky enough to have gotten the opportunity to find a job that pays me really well and takes care of me considering that I don't have a college degree...

Would I go back? maybe one day... maybe not

I went to college... but my degree isn't really recognized here and the difference is quite huge between the jobs I could get over there and what I could get here.

If you like retail, or plan not to work, well, I guess it doesn't matter. But in lots of retail businesses there isn't much in term of promotions available, and, depending where you live, you might struggle financially. Although my experience with retail is horrible bosses and managers, or having a hard time finding a job, so not really the best lol. But I guess if you find the right place it wouldn't be too bad... but again, most places will pay you $8 an hour if you're lucky.

My BIL has been delivering pizza for years (he's 40 now), and he's as happy as can be, but he lives in a relatively cheap area, and rents a small house that certainly would not accept pets.

I've been offered managerial type position in most everyplace I worked within a year or two. Not bad...even in Ca where things are so expensive, back when I lived there I could have afforded to live alone/rent on what I was making as a book buyer/asst manager of a store.

I have had bad bosses, but I think most people have...degrees don't affect that so much lmbo. The only way to avoid bad bosses/workplace drama is to work for yourself...IMO.

Never had issues climbing upwards...in fact I was usually asked to do more and get paid more when it didn't really interest me much...I've turned things down just because I don't want to think about work at home, ever...and the more you take on in any job the more likely it is to come home with you, it seems to me.

I enjoy the freedom and lack of "corporateness" bookstores offer...least the non B/N types. there's nothing so nice as spending a day with books and people who love books...and getting paid for it. Xmas bites but the extra pay...not so much hehe.

Agreed HBH.

My Uncle (God rest his soul) worked at McDonalds his entire life. it was his VERY first job. I think McDonalds is as minimum wage as you can get. And yet... he ended up being district manager and then got promoted to whatever the next highest level is (I just can't think of the name right now) and he made AMAZING money. His wife was able to be a SAHM to four children and they have a large beautiful home AND he was able to take early retirement because he didn't NEED to work anymore.

Who says you can't advance in retail and minimum wage jobs? YOu know they need people to run the chains from a higher level than just in store ;) Those who don't advance don't try hard enough or don't WANT to. but there is always opportunity to advance.

I wanted to go, but ended up with a family business dumped in my lap for little or no pay while my younger sister got to go to an uber expensive private college (Oberlin).

I tried to go back and pick up some financial aid when I was 24 (I hadn't lived with my parents since I was 18), got run around and around in circles and informed that I wasn't eligible for any aid because my parents made too much money . . . WTF????

So . . . many years later, yes, not having some sort of BA has really hurt. There are several things I could be doing that I am amply qualified for, and would love to do, but I'm not allowed to because I don't have a four year degree - it doesn't even matter if it is a relevant degree. I could have a four year degree in underwater basketweaving and it would clear the obstacles.

If you've got a chance to go, especially if it's paid for, TAKE IT.

Oh, and Sparks, the black and white ones are Holsteins.

Holsteins give a LOT of milk.

Jerseys give GOOD milk ;)
