I don't see how they could even attempt to make a law like that....discrimination is not allowed for people, but it is for dogs?? It's a messed up world...

What is SB861? I've heard that it was a law in California passed to control breeding of pit bulls and some other breeds..but I don't really understand the law or why so many people are upset by it. Are they planning to make it illegal to breed pit bulls at all?? Or make it illegal to own one? I don't get it

Amalthea,
It is a law that discriminates on breed. They are trying to make it illegal to own a pit bull 'type' dog.
It is a sad world :(.

I got an email similar to that a while ago. It is very sad. Banning Breeds of dogs isn't going to help with the ignorant owners. They'll just find another breed to destroy. Then what? No one will be allowed to own a dog.

what is the world coming to?

That is very sad...and seems really extreme...pit bull "type" dog? what is that supposed to mean?! even dogs that are mixed or look like pits? Some of the sweetest, most docile and best-behaved dogs I've ever met were pure pit bulls. In fact, my dog Moro's 'boyfriend' is a pit bull ...our friend has a male pit named Keenan, and Moro adores him, it's hilarious how she turns into a wriggling, kissing, cuddling lovesick puppy as soon as he's within sight...and Keenan just sits there with this long-suffering look on his face while he gets mauled by her slobbery wolfy affections ;) Sad how certain breeds are seen in such a negative light. Moro is a wolf hybrid and I see the same kind of fear and misunderstanding about their temperaments... high content wolfdogs are more likely to be unmanageable pets, and dogs mixed with wolf do have some tendencies that could potentially be dangerous. But that doesn't mean every wolfdog will eventually turn into a vicious wild animal. ANY dog of significant size has the potential to be dangerous, but that is no indication that they will ever show aggression toward people. People seem to expect the same of pits, that they will 'turn on you' with no warning and with no provocation. Ridiculous if you ask me. The only dog that has ever bit me was a neighbor's cocker spaniel when I was a little kid! You can't just label an entire breed or type of dog, it's all about individual personality.

It's sooo sad. I bookmarked that a while back and I went through like half of the pages. It just breaks my heart. These kinds of laws have made me so protective and probably defensive about these breeds when someone says they're "mean" or "bad." I love all dogs and it's the people who don't raise their dogs right who should be punished, not the dogs.
As a rottie lover and owner I feel soooo strongly about bully breeds and feared ones like rotts, dobes, etc. and I can't imagine what it would be like to have to give up our dogs because some irresponsible people don't raise their dogs right.
There was a guy that my mom knew who used to have a pit, and he used to try to make him feared, fierce, and used to play really really aggressively with him. He would tell people how tough he was would break boards over his back repeatedly! I feel soo sorry for the dog and I don't even know the details. I mean on any dog that would be horrible, but to a pit? They need to be raised right, with a firm, but gentle guide, and that was not what this guy did. That's the kind of person that truly messes up the breed and people's perspective of them. Poor dog. :(

omg, that is so terrible. I just dont see how ANYONE could be for banning pits after looking at just ONE picture on that site. Those pics just show how affectionate, loyal, loving, and ADORABLE pitties are!!!

this one totally broke my heart...although it totally made me happy knowing that she must have gotten a very loving home!

This definitely made me think...we were thinking about a second dog...not right now...maybe in a year or so..and we were thinking about all kind of different breeds. I know, it's still in the future...but I've been thinking and talking to hubby about rescueing another pit. I'm pretty sure that's what we'll do when it's the right time to get T-Bone a forever playmate.

It is just soooo sad. I hope people will educate themselves better.
