Collie mix from the pound. He's been here since March. Plenty of exercise. He's outside a lot, and has a playmate. Gets fed first thing in the morning and again in early afternoon. About every other morning we awake (early) to find he has given us a "present" on the carpet in the living room. Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks

Well since he does it regularly it should be pretty easy. Try to get him to poop right before bedtime by taking him on a walk. Have you tried crating him at night so he won't poop?

He sleeps in the house. He is crate trained, but the crate is going to stay in the garage. As far as the walk - he goes well over 15 minutes chasing tennis balls non-stop at night. Then he comes in and collapses (in a good way). Should I move his feeding time up even further?

Does he sleep in his crate? That would keep him from eliminating at night as most dogs wont go in their crates. And if he is crate trained thenhe wont mind being confined, dogs like to sleep in a "den" type area anyway. Also if he is in his crate he wont be able to get into anything and destroy it or hurt himself while you were sleeping.

My dog sleeps in our room so if he has to go his movement wakes me up and I take him out. He does not like his crate at all, or I would crate him at night.

You might consider moving his feeding time up? I don't know what time you are feeding him, vs. when he is pooping, and what you have tried already. Maybe if you feed him later rather than earlier he wont have to go until the morning. Another tactic if you track his morning feed vs his afternoon poo you would be able to use that to estimate a good evening feed time.
