Why do some retail businesses have you fill out 30 page questionnaires when you apply for a job? I am filling out one such questionnaire right now, with those questions with the answers that you "strongly agree, agree, disagree, or strongly agree". Sometimes I don't know what to say to them. For example, there is this question:

"I have never been annoyed when people express ideas different from my own." Should I agree or disagree? I mean, obviously you get annoyed with people sometimes when they have differing opinions, but it doesn't mean you show this annoyance. However, if I say that I DO get annoyed, will that make them think that I will be unkind to customers?

I hate those things. I hate them, hate them, hate them. They are intended to be mind games, and the questions are often poorly worded. I feel your pain.

I'm filling out a different one now, and this one has questions on it like, "what is the total amount of objects stolen from employers in the past 5 years?" $0, $5, etc. And other asking if you have ever used crack. Are people actually THAT stupid that they would put anything other than $0, or say that they used crack?

ETA: I'm done filling that one out now, *whew*. Now its time to have some soup.

Ah, but if you put 0, they assume you are lying.

There are many reasons why I hate those things but the two on top are the fake pop pscyhology they use to justify giving (and scoring) the tests and the fact that they ASSUME you are slime. Followed quickly by the poorly worded and sometimes ungramatical questions and the fact the tests are appearently designed to weed out people with intelligence, intiative and creativity, not to mention the scruplously honest!

Among the reasons I become a lawyer was that I would never have to take one of those d*mn things again. Right up there with, "I will never have to go to a creepy little clinic again and pee in a cup so that they can make sure that I am not smoking pot when I am at home from my non-heavy-equipment-involved desk job . . . and make me pay for it."

But I'm not lying. I don't steal! If I put anything other than $0, I WOULD be lying! :p
Welcome to the bizarre world of corporate loss prevention. Everyone is a thief . . . if they say they aren't a thief, they are a thief, though if they admit they are thief, they are a thief. No matter what you say, you lose. Because if you are working retail, obviously you are low-class lying thieving scum. Right?

Cristy we seriously need to find you a job out by where I work. Maybe I can spend a little time this weekend (if I have some free time) and research what all is out here in the Mclean/Tyson's corner area

I will take ANY help you are willing to give me! I am SO tired of filling out applications and online questionnaires! Did you know that Staples has one that's like, 80 pages! I saw that and I was like, f that!

Goverment contractors may not be hiring right now, they are on a hiring freeze so that they can see what the new administration is going to do.

Is there somewhere I can research what stuff is in that area? How were you going to research it?

It is my experience from the line of work that I am in to answer those questions with either "I strongly agree" or " I strongly disagree." They want to see that you are capable of making decision rather than being wishy washy. My line of work is always looking for type A personalties so this questioning is always used in the "psychological" part of the testing process.

Just my two cents. ;)

I would just google the companies in the area... type in businesses in Mclean or jobs in mclean or something. Did you still not hear back from that place in my building? I can also ask Devon as well. She's been applying at tons of jobs out here and probably has a better idea of who out here is currently hiring.

I have a question.... What if your employer steals from you? o_0

I hate the pens that he buys... I like the super thick more expensive ones/free medical advert pens... So I buy them/bring them in MYSELF, and he always "borrows" them and doesn't give them back! GRRRR!

that and I like colored binder clips... not the ones we have, so I buy them myself too! :p Oh, and the multi-colored dry erase makers that I just *had* to have...

Working retail was one of the worst experiences of my life.

After I graduated with my Bachelor's degree I had a difficult time finding a job. I worked at Hollister as a manager for 2 weeks... that was the worst 2 week period of my LIFE.

Loss prevention would write down every outfit that everyone was wearing, and if it wasn't on your "account" they'd assume you stole it. Some kid who worked there was accused of stealing something, because it was an outfit he bought before he even started working there  Total insanity.

And yeah, those tests are terrible... they think they can use their own psychology tests from 1980 to hire people.

The sad thing is that some people actually will answer those stupid questions incorrectly.

The reason they put in questions like that is to give them an iron-clad reason to terminate you should they ever find out you HAVE or are using crack or whatever other substance is listed, or that you have stolen a paper clip. Lying on an app is an automatic reason to fire without being liable for any kind of unemployment.
