My sister is married and they both work full time jobs. My sister works for the state. They have 2 children who were both born with medical issues. They both have congenital cateracts. The youngest one who just turned 3 this month has been diagnosed with autism. He needs services... there's no way around it. Not only does he need the services at his school.. he needs them at home.

She is getting denied left and right because according to the poverty level, they are over 400% over. They make decent money, but they also have a big house payment and 2 car payments as well as all the medical bills that never end with evaluations, medications, follow ups. Both of her kids have had multiple multiple surgeries between the two of them for their cateracts issues. She's never asked for a hand out.. she always pays her bills. She can't sell her house at this point in time because they'd be upside down in the loan because the housing market sucks and they had a few foreclosures in their neighborhood which dropped the value of her house significantly. She can't sell her car because she has to have a very dependable vehicle for her job. She is a case worker and has to make home visits all over the state.

People told her to apply for common health supplement (a form of mass health) that no one gets denied because there's a premium involved. Well, they denied her. You know what they told her to do?????? The woman behind the desk actually told her to divorce her husband and come back in with the paperwork and they can approve her. My sister said she wasn't going to do that, it was absurd. Then the lady tells her she can get legally separated from him and live in the same household and list one person in bedroom A and the other in bedroom B as long as their on different floors. She was being told to scam and fraud the system

She is so overwhelmed right now. Her son has to have these services in order to start the building blocks to teach him how to comfort and cope with his environment. It will give him the best chance at being able to be independent as an adult. He's having more issues now. He sits there on the floor blocking his ears and rocking as he screams "it's too loud, too loud" And now her older son is acting out and having odd behaviors. She's found him numerous times just catatonic.. staring off into nowhere and not hearing her calling him. He snaps right out of it when she finally gets his attention.. but it's something new he's been doing. I don't believe it's just Daydreaming. And he's going on 5 years old and has been potty trained for a while but all of a sudden he's smearing poop all over the bathroom walls.

I was at a loss for words for her. I feel so bad, i wish there was something i could do. I advised her to start researching the available benefits out there and what help is available. This just makes me soooooo angry that they won't let her get any kind of benefits for a child that is in desperate need for them. She's a hard worker and pays her taxes and bills and yet she gets punished for not being a couch potato and sucking off the system for every penny.

Anyone have any ideas on what she can do?

what state does she live in? NY state does not operate like that--there are services available as long as the child qualifies (per established criteria).

Unbelievable she has to divorce or separate to get help for her children. to be honest,,,I would do it.
Why should she have too? Why break up a happy loving family? There has got to be another way some how.

Wish I had a suggestion but I live in Canada and everything is covered here.

she's in massachusetts. And to make matters worse.. there's some kind of clause that prevents her from receiving some sort of state funds because she is a state worker. This is crazy! My heart just breaks for her right now. No child should have to go out with early intervention or any sort of services like this. I know things cost money, but geez... who gets affected by this the most, the child who is so innocent. He deserves a chance at as close to a normal life as possible.

Just terrible, so terrible. So many Americans are living like this, too, and it's so sad. Not rich enough, but not poor enough, either.

I feel for you. I hope your sister can figure something out. I have no suggestions but just wanted to say I feel her pain and hope she makes it through okay. She sounds like a terrific person.

does she not have health insurance for the family? That at least would give her a place to start.

She's such a good mom and she loves her boys so much. She wants what's best for them... just like everyone else does for their own children. She is feeling like a failure because she can't afford to pay for his services. She's stuck in a bad situation. Had she foreseen this all happening, she would never have bought the home she has right now. I just can't believe her son has to suffer the consequences of her working for a living and making too much money according to the poverty scale.

they don't cover services like he is requiring. She's already looked into it. She's had two evaluations done on him and they both highly recommend he start receiving these services asap to help him.

that is a shame--it's an awful feeling to know your child/ren need help and not be able to access it. :(
