I went to chicago this weekend to meet with friends, well her neighborhood is run down and what not and her neighbor has a whole bunch of dogs and she has this one miniature pinscher that is going to have puppies really soon, but they cant afford to take care of the puppies so they said they were just going to dump them away. So I was shocked and said I would take the mother in for awhile until she has the puppies and until the puppies can be on there own. I've never looked after newborn puppies and I was wondering for the shots that they have to get in their early stages of life about how much would it cost for each puppy?

You can buy your own shots and deworming to save money and take her in after she gives birth to make sure she is done and no pups are stuck, than take the pups in for a early exam and later for fecals. This way you save money on shots but have extra cash for the 911 like a emergency c section.

Best of luck :)

That is great you are going to Foster.

I would get yourself a book on dog breeding. There is a lot that needs to be learned about the care newborn pups need. The book will tell you how to introduce solids, keep the pups warm, supplementing if needed and some emergency care.

Is the dam whelping at your home or her current home? Newborns need to nurse every two hours and may need assistance. It is important you make sure they are all eating every two hours. If not, it is time to bottle feed or tube feed.

As far as vaccines go, those can be started at 6 weeks. Make sure the pups don't go to their new homes until 8-10 weeks. You can call your vet for an estimate on vaccine cost or do them yourself and save some money. Deworming should also be started on the dam after birth and when the pups turn 2 weeks...

best bet would be to call your vet...
i have reacently sent home a litter of 4 chi pups, my vet doesnt like to give the first set of shot on such little dogs untill 8 weeks (which i agree with)
for a litter of 4 it cost me $48 for the dewclaws done at 3 days (it might be more for you as minpins usually have the tail docked, but you dont HAVE to especially since these pups should be going home spay/neuter), and $160 alltogether for the pups to have their checkup and first shots at 8 weeks old.
this is in CT so it could be cheaper where you are as ct is typiclaly expensive.

We were also unlucky and my female had to have a c-section and emergency spay which cost $2000, id say try and put $3000 for everything including a just in case emergency like a c-section.
i would also think about getting intouch with the aspca and reporting them and mabe getting the low cost spay/neuter van down there...

for the most part though if she has an easy delivery, your not going to have to do much! make sure she feeds them about every 2 hours for the first couple of weeks, keep em warm and out of drafts and at 3 weeks start intoducing puppy mush (Puppy milk replacer alone on a plate at first then slowly adding more and more solid matter presoaked ground up kibble is perfect for that) they should be weaned around 6-7 weeks and can head to their new homes at 8 weeks (toy breeds should stay longer if possible, i sent the chi pups home at 10 weeks and one is staying till just under 12 weeks at her new owners request due to some things going on at the house. but since this is more of a Charity case, they can go home at 8 weeks if you want them too!

hoep this helps!

since youve never given pups shots before (and toy/small breeds are prone to bad reactions), id just shell out the little extra and have the vet do it...

Be prepared to be up all night long also when the pups are due. I stay up to help mom and pups out to clean them up and make sure they start nursing right away. My vet charges $3 a pup for tails and dew claws. Shots I do myself, but the vets around here are starting to not recognize shots done by individual people. I tell people they can bring the puppy back for the next set of shots. This insures I can see how they are doing and answer any questions they might have. Good Luck.

For some reason, these areas are and have been over looked!

When is the dog due?

The dog many tramatize being seperated from her master, which could cause complications.

Do you have the money put aside for a C-SECTION? Small dogs of this nature can very well need this.

Have you ever assisted a dog in labour before? Do you know what too look for when the dog runs into complications?

If not I would have a vet ready and at hand for all and any emergencies required. Not everyone out here is top knotch on doggie deliveries and expenses. It is very kind of you to take the doggie in, but be carefull it is not as easy as everyone out here makes it sound like! It is about the dog and the pups no one and or anyone else!:) Good luck!

This is exactly what I wrote to another girl on the forums. I hope this helps a little.:

Im not here to critisize... I started somewhere too. Keep a close eye on her. Watch for nesting behavior such as digging in clothes or going into dark places like behind your couch or under your bed. Sometimes their temp can drop and then go right back up again so keep taking her temp to see if it stays low for a while. But at day 62 shes most likely ready and will deliver, most likely within the next 15 hours. What I usually do is put my ready to whelp females in an ex pen in the corner of my bedroom and put the blinds down so it is quiet and dark. Get some clean towels ready for her to lay on while she whelps. Get a few towels because you will have to change them periodically because they get dirty really quick. Also get a few face clothes to clean the puppies off with. She will do it herself but it is good to dry them too. You might want to get a sterile set of nail clippers or scissors to cut the umbilical cords. She will also do this herself but its better if do it since this is her first litter? (Correct me if I am wrong). If you let her do it she may bite them off too short and the puppy will bleed a lot. Make sure you cut the umbilical cord off about an inch and a half or two inches from the belly, then pinch the cut end of the umbilical cord for about a minute. Watch to make sure it doesn't start bleeding again. You may also want to get a basket and put a heating pad turned on low or hot water bottle in the bottem covered with some soft towels so that you can move the puppies into it while the female is delivering the next puppy. That way you eliminate the chance of the puppies getting squished while she delivers. Not all dogs are that careless but some are. In between deliveries you can give the pups back to her. Also please understand that some dogs get very protective the minute they deliver the first pup. She may not want you any where near her. If thats the case step back and watch and if you see her having any problems then step in. And please DO NOT GIVE UP ON A PUPPY. If they come out and they are not breathing it DOES NOT mean that they are dead. Put them in a face cloth and rub them vigorously. If that doesnt work then wrap them in the face cloth, cup your hands around the puppy with its head facing away from you, stand up, put the puppy above your head and kind of fling it towards that ground. MAKE SURE YOU HANG ON!!! AND SUPPORT THE PUPPIES WHOLE BODY! and then rub the puppy again. I have worked on puppies for 20 minutes like this and they finally came around and were fine. If you have any more ?'s or need some more help email me @ [email protected] and I will send you my phone number. Best of luck.
