So i have a friend/customer who i've always considered pretty dog savy. Til today. She does rescue and a decent amount of training and owns three or so dogs..

So today shes talking about how her two pits are destructive when shes not home. I mentioned a crate and this is what she says..

"oh, we only have one crate so we crate them together, they are puppies so they like it."

:yikes::yikes:

I didn't know what to say to that so i left it alone. WoW.

how big is her crate?!?

maybe she thought you meant more of a kennel run.. or something like that. i dont see how someone could stuff more than 1 pit in a crate

my miniature poodle wont even share a crate..

I've crated Sierra with another dog, but at work when they're SUPERVISED! I'd NEVER trust two dogs together in a crate, alone. No matter how well they know and like eachother.

That's scary.

No , its a crate. AC is after her for too many cats. So the dogs live completely inside where she can hide them.

I kept thinking "how the heck do they fit?"

On the same note i came home once to find Emma and (i forget who, probably Scooter) in the same crate. Its a crate for an 80lb dog, and they are like 25lbs each....Still, I had a COW on my husband.

Wow ... what a bad idea!! Just because they get along outside the crate doesn't mean they will always get along jammed together into one!! We currently have a recently-adopted adult Golden Retriever and a West Highland Terrier puppy (older puppy), both boys. Neither is DA at all, the Golden is very mild-mannered and gets along well with the bouncy little guy. But still, we wouldn't even THINK of ever crating them togeither!! :yikes:

(For that matter, we don't crate the Golden at all ... he's housebroken and doesn't get into things as long as there's no bread on the counter for him to counter-surf. <G> Only the Westie is crated b/c he's still a puppy and will get into things if left unsupervised for a while.)

its like sticking 10 people in an elevator and leaving them there for 8 hours.. believe me, fights WILL happen.
^^^ Good analogy!! It really is a fight waiting to happen with those dogs.

No , its a crate. AC is after her for too many cats. So the dogs live completely inside where she can hide them.
So she also has the dogs entirely inside?!? How do they get exercise? I can see fights even more likely between two un-exercised young pitties ... these are high-energy dogs when young!! Does she at least take them outside for them to "go"? I have heard of people pad-training tiny dogs, especially people who live in high-rises, but can't imagine inside-training for two pit bulls!!

They are let out for potty breaks, but i hear they also have a lot of accidents (probably from not being let out enough) because she said the laminate floor was ruined from the urine..

No, no exercise. She occasionally brings one of the dogs in for visits but as far as i know the only exercise they get is playing with each other inside. I might be wrong, but thats the impression i get.

oh ya and they recently ate the mattress i hear.

Whats bizzare about this is they spend a fortune on good food and vet care. They are all in good shape/cared for. Just cooped up. Its so odd.

I told her to get rid of most of the cats and licence the dogs and stop this nonsence but she saids its impossible for her to own less than eight cats.

I can't imagine living everyday in fear that your pets are going to be seized.

That is a sign of a very serious mental disorder which is usually the start of animal hoarding- If you are close enough with her is it something you could bring up- usually it does not end well for the person affected by the mental disorder nor the animals.

Yeah, Im familiar with hoarding. What really sad about hoarding is the lack of a "cure" for these people. I remember reading that a persons chance of hoarding again was like 99% or som'thing ridiculous.

She doesn't have alot of the charateristics of a hoarder tho. She doesn't actively aquire new animals. All the animals are healthy. BUT i can totally see her becoming one if she felt the AC heat was off of her.

AC was investigating them but then they moved to avoid it. They have an estranged relative that keeps reporting them.

But yeah, shes nothing compared to the lady that had som'thing like 187 animals that came in my store wanting to buy more. She was so proud of herself, kept talking about all the fines she had to pay like it was a good thing. She was extremely and obviously mentally ill tho. Probably hadn't showered in a while either.

I definitely see the problem with her situation, but I have crated 3 dogs together before. BUT it was for an hour, I was in the same room (They were about 3 feet away from me). The crate is the largest you can find, and I had three dogs under 15 pounds in it. So no problems.

And because she has 8 cats shes a hoarder? You say they get vet treatment and they are well taken care of. Whats the big deal?

Am I automatically a hoarder because I have a large number of cats? I can see if someone goes out and buys more and more animals, but by the sounds of it this person takes good care of her animals, but is a bit ignorant to certain things (Like not to keep 2 pitties crated together for any reason).

You missread my post. I said i don't feel that she is a hoarder for the reasons i mentioned. BUT i could see her aquiring too many if she knew she would get away with it.

She said she can't ever see herself having less than 8 cats. She currently has over 20 cats plus the dogs plus many many many reptiles. Her rational is that shes never going to get rid of all of them, because she has to have at least 8, so if shes going to be illegal about it, might as well go for the gold lol.

Well, I still don't think a number automatically means anything. (Ive got 45).

My cats are not very old either. The oldest is 10 and the 5 youngsters are not even a year yet, so I will have a large number of cats for atleast the next 10-15 years lol. I usually have comments to say when people automatically assume because they don't have space, or they don't have the means to care for their 2 (Just an example) cats that I clearly can't care for mine. Cause hey, everyone can handle the same amount of pets, just like every breed of dog is right for everyone.

in Miami, there is NO LIMIT on the amounts of cats you can have.. alot of crazy cat people in this city because of it. but also, it helps because alot of people here with alot of cats get the all vaccinated, licensed, ect..
