....child who have doggy manners :) *faints from sheer shock*

I went to the pet store today to get some food for the dogs. I was at the counter paying for my food, with one of my boys sitting nicely next to me waiting for his treat from the clerk. I turn towards my boy to give him his treat and catch a young 4ish child standing about 6ft from me. He was waiting patiently for me to turn around so he could ask if he could pet my dog. I said yes and put my boy in a sit stay. He didn't run up and wrap his arms around my boy he walked up and offered a hand to him and in return got a huge wet slobbery kiss. The kid stepped back giggling and said good doggy and give my boy a pat on his head. I was very impressed, before I left his mom told me that he waited the entire time I was checking out just so he could ask to pet my boy.

I'm used to the unruley child who's parent let's them do whatever they want and then gets upset when I tell them they can't pet my dogs. This was definately a breath of fresh air ;)

Woo Hoo! It's so nice to run into those!! Yay!! :)

I run into a lot of polite kids, actually.

Up at my cottage, we get lots of kids coming around to see the dogs. One boy in particular was obsessed with Mochi and kept asking to take him for a walk. We said it wouldn't be a good idea, because the kid weighed about 80 pounds and Mochi weighed 75... Well, this kid a had Malamute at home that he missed!! (Probably the reason he was so drawn to Mala-Mochi, LOL!) We let him walk Mochi down on the beach with DH's close supervision. Mochi pooped, and when DH went to scoop it, the boy stopped him. He WANTED to pick up the poop. He said it was 'part of walking the dog!' :yikes:

LOL, I tried to tell you guys, not all people are stupid and irrational. The stupid and irrational just happen to be the ones you notice.

bcmoffatt now that is a responsible kid! Whenever I'm taking my dog for a walk to the park and we meet kids we know ans thy ask to walk him they run off, let him poo in the middle of the park *sigh* and come back and tell me!
And shazbot, those one's are great! I think after the whole dog attack thing parents either kept their kids away from dogs at all costs or taught them like this, and it's always nice when a child is that gentle and responsible around a dog.

For some reason, there are A LOT of kids around here with dog manners . . . I've only encountered a few that were a problem . . .and the problem was usually petting her the wrong way, instead of more drastic things.

I could only wish that I ran into more polite children. The norm around here are the kids that just run up and wrap their arms around the dogs neck. I have a female that is terrified of kids, I had a young child run up to her pull her tail and smack her on the butt thinking it was funny. Her look was priceless though, even though she was terrified, she was looking at me like ma get this thing away from me pleaseeee!!!!!

It's funny, when I'm with the Papillons I meet all kinds of polite kids. It's the ADULTS I want to smack silly. Now when I'm with Grady (65# of happiness) it seems that all bets are off & everyone just runs up to him & pets him. It's a good thing he's fairly well people socialized.

Annie...do people want to pick them up? I get that ALL THE TIME with Ellie since she's so small..and Paps are even smaller. I think that's really rude. I wouldn't ask or like some do...just go on and TRY to pick up someone else's dog...sheesh!

I tend to think it is the adults that are the problem. We took Max (11 week old Pap) out for Halloween and people couldn't keep their hands off him.

I have been teaching my kids (they are 3 & 2) that they can't just walk up to a dog. They need to ask the owner and let the dog smell their hands. My son (2) is still afraid of dogs, so I don't really have to worry about it yet, but my daughter usually remembers to ask.

Actually, Gina, Aspen is pretty large for a Pap. He's 14.5# so he's a bit hard to try & pick up. So, no they don't try & pick him up. But I totally agree with you about it being rude. I mean it's akin to rubbing a pregnant woman's belly or picking up a stranger's child. Well, not really but it's awfully forward.
