Omfg. Does anyone have any tips for getting rid of freaking acne? It's not food related, I've done a slow elimination diet of common allergens that cause acne, and I've eliminated dairy completely (I miss cheese :( ) but it's NOT GETTING BETTER.

I use the over the counter 2% silicic acid at least once a day, plus dial soap to kill bacteria, and moisturize at night. It's not anything worse than usually white heads, (no black heads) though I do get the occasional "blind" pimples that hurt like hell. I can't afford to go to a dermatologist, so is there anything I can do to help clear up these blasted breakouts aside from what I've been doing?

(I also have an extremely hard time not picking at it, and keeping my hands off my face, but I do an okay job at that except when they hurt, which is pretty often now)

One of those situations where you can see a mile away that it will be a train wreck. Everyone tries to help but is rejected. You think they hit rock bottom but it gets worse and worse. You hope something will be a wakeup call but the bad choices keep coming.

It is hard to watch and sad too. I don't know what anyone can do at this point except pray she starts accepting help and make good decisions.
I've had a similar situation with people in my life- who've been through this, they eventually got help,& recovered. It took awhile, but, they've drastically improved. One of them went to a inpatient,& that was helpful.

Maybe suggest a support group online? I'm actually on a few of them,& they help me,& I eventually told some in real life. So, that might be option.

Their might not be anything to now, beside be there for her, pray for,& hope for the best. Whack is unfortunate, just know it isn't your fault,& that you(& others), are trying there best.

ETA:I deleted something, because it's just too personal.

Have you tried NOT using harsh cleansers and treatments? Sometimes in over stripping the skin it can actually make things worse.
I have. I went about two weeks after I first started breaking out and it just got worse and worse and worse. It DOES get better as long as I keep up with keeping it moisturized after I clean my face, but it never goes away completely, and then even following this routine it will just break out into RAGE. lol.

I know I have oily skin on my face, the other thing I've considering is just trying those gentle face wipes for a while and see what they do, or switching to the other type of cleaner which is I think Benzoyl Peroxide?

I stay pretty hydrated, which is supposed to help, but I get sweaty and gross every day (I'm either working on or under cars or doing construction with my dad) so I'm sure being out in the sun, and getting sweaty isn't helping.

I've heard that dermatologists can do a sort of skin peel type thing to help release hair follicles that are trapped? If I could get that done, and not have it cost an arm and a leg, or do something similar at home, perhaps that would help. :/

It will get worse at first, but seriously, don't use over the counter harsh cleaners. They will help at first, until they won't. They'll dry out your skin (esp. those with alcohol) which tricks your skin into thinking it needs to produce more oils, which makes you break out more, and stuffs up your pores.

I make a pretty simple scrub that is amazing and makes your skin SO soft and CLEAN. I just take coconut oil and mix with sugar (a friend uses salt, which works just as well) until it's kind of like a dough. If you want you can add essential oils (be sure they are natural!!) for scent. Then I just scrub my face with it, and let it sit for a while. Wash off and dab your face off. It feels SO amazing. Don't use cream or anything after.

I also do a face mask with medicinal clay 2-3 times a week.

I would also try using some natural clensers without alcohol to clean your face daily. Not sure if something like whole foods will carry it, but my favorit cleanser it also with medicinal clay.

I just saw something about using a clay mask, and that you can get ones that actually do work from drug stores, so I'm going to pick some of that up. How long do you let the coconut oil and sugar sit when you use that? I usually do this at night so I have the time, but if it's something that needs to be done twice a day I'm not sure I'll be able to do it in the morning.

I usually let it sit 5-10 minutes - but you don't HAVE to. I'd recommend doing it in the evenings only, since it does open up your pores a bit. I also just do it right before showering and leave it one while I shower and then wash off before I get out. :)
You can make a "batch" of scrub before hand as well (this is what I do) and put it in a jar. Just be sure you don't keep the coconut oil in the bathroom since it has a pretty low melting point.

Samuel, have you tried tea tree oil? I have super gross oily skin and am prone to sebum buildup and blackheads/whiteheads, but gentle cleansing and tea tree oil really helps if I get breakouts. It works as an antiseptic on my face and I dab it on full-strength around any zits, or mix some in with coconut oil before letting it sit on my face. I also put tea tree oil in my shampoo and in the facial cleanser I use (for OTC stuff, honestly biore's charcoal cleanser and a woven facial buff has worked better for clearing my skin than anything with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid) The tea tree oil is very tingly when it gets into your pores and I love the clean feeling!

Part of your skin's irritation could be the combination of the medicated cleanser and then the dial soap. I've used dial on my face a couple times in a pinch and I always got new zits afterwards. What is the moisturizer you're using?

I haven't tried tea tree oil, but I need to get some coconut oil apparently, and I might as well try to find tea tree oil as well. I saw the charcoal cleanser stuff, but I didn't pick any up, though I do have a scrubber for my face.

I just started using the dial soap because my mother suggested it for killing any bacteria on my skin.

I have the CVS brand daily moisturizing lotion with colloidal oatmeal, it doesn't seem to have anything bad in it that I can see. Maybe it's too much (I don't use a lot, a little goes a long way, and it's also what I use on healing tattoos) and is clogging my pores after I clean my face?

The worst of mine is just huge red angry spots that usually don't have a head on them. Those suck :/ I've heard aspirin and isopropyl alcohol in a paste (that may have been suggested here, but I can't remember) will help get rid of those, but I don't keep aspirin or isopropyl alcohol in the house lol, so...

I'm going to second the tea tree oil!
I have found it to be incredibly effective as a spot treatment, and addition to my daily routine.

I too used to have pretty bad acne that just wasn't going away. Tried everything the dermatologist would give me and it just didn't work.

For the past 5 or so years now I've been using strictly grape seed oil - no soap, no alcohol etc. with the addition of sea salt a few times a week for exfoliation, and tea tree oil if I do end up with a breakout.
My skin has never been better.

Hopefully it works for you!

Do you think Diana ever says "eff this. I'm tired. I don't want to be Wonder Woman anymore."

Because I'm tired. I don't want to be Wonder Woman anymore.

My sister had a flat tire this morning. and my dad told her again she really needs to get a new car. And apparently she started crying because her husband needs a new car too, and they can't even buy him a new car for another two years because they have to pay down their debt, so she said "I'll never have a baby" because he doesn't want to have kids if they have a bunch of debt.
And I told my parents "you should just buy her a new car." thinking the response would be "well if we bought HER a car we'd have to buy YOU a car," which of course is stupid but that's what I expected.
Instead I got "Well, we said YOU should buy a new car, and then you can give her YOUR old car."

really??? really??? me? me AGAIN. I can't.

I have over 800 picturs on my camera's SD card from my trip. I just got home and tried to upload them so that I could edit/post them...

MY COMPUTER IS NOT READING THE CARD AS HAVING ANY PICTURES!!!!

They show up fine on my camera... I remember somehow manually import pictures ages ago as I had this problems once before... and now I can not for the life of me find how to do it... it was using the start buttom and typing in specific codes to transfer files without the computer being able to think about it. All I can find now is how to go into a program and click import... but that doesn't work because my computer is not recogizing the pictures! ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

Okay, I know we don't know each other, but I pretty much just have to say "amen sister" and clink an imaginary wine glass with you. My sister it so irresponsible with money and... life pretty much. My dad is such an enabler and since we lived in the same town (until a few weeks ago) he was constantly calling me to help her since he lives an hour away. NO I don't want to wire my sister $300 dollars because she went to Colorado on vacation and realized 4 days in that she couldn't afford. NO I don't want to pay for her textbooks because she didn't fill out her financial aid form in time. NO I don't want to let her borrow my car because she didn't get an oil change for 60,000 miles and her car is broken.

NO.

So... you're not alone.

It's not even my sister really. It's everybody. It's that co-worker. And that one. And this person, and that one, and that one too. Everybody has problems and they bring them to me to fix. And I can fix them, and I do, because that's just what I do. I fix everybody's problems. Everybody's mistakes. At work I think it's contributing to the problem. Because it's okay if somebody screws up, because I will catch it, and I will fix it. No worries, Beanie will save the day, again, because she always does, because she is Wonder Woman and that is what she does.

And now even my parents are in on the game. My sister has a problem and instead of them helping her out to save the day (which is what a lot of parents do) - DON'T WORRY, WE CAME UP WITH A WAY YOU CAN SAVE THE DAY!

Because that is what I do.

And I just can't anymore. I am so tired of always having to save the day. because nobody comes to save me. My Justice League is nowhere to be found. It is just me. Against the entire world, and my own problems, and everybody else's too. And I just have no idea how much longer I can do this.

That really sucks. I know I'm in no place to give advice because I don't know you, but no one deserves to have to carry everyone on their shoulders. I know it would be difficult, but I hope you take some time to your self and honestly- let them hit bottom. If they realize you aren't going to be their rock, that you won't fix every little mistake they make, they'll have to be actual adults and do the work themselves. I know that's not easy, especially if their mistakes can effect others but I really hope you take care of yourself and lighten your load. I'm rooting for you.

So I called my Dr, and explained to her that I was poor and couldn't come see her, and she agreed to give an over the phone consult about it, with the caveat that if it gets worse I have to come in whether I want to or not. She asked a bunch of questions about the type of acne I'm experiencing, (white heads, no black heads, and the big red ones that don't have an "eye" that hurt like hell, those only come up occasionally) how oily my skin gets if I DON'T use anything (REALLY oily) and what I usually do to clean my face and if I touched my face a lot (guilty as charged).

She told me to switch from salicylic acid to benzoyl peroxide, and recommended an otc called Acne Free Severe 24 hour, and that she's had patients use it with really great success rates. She also told me to keep my filthy hands off my face, lol, which I already know, but it's rather difficult as I'm a picker at things like that.

It's a four step thing, and I've only used it for a day so far, and it could be a placebo effect I guess, but my breakouts ARE less red, though they're itchy, and the deeper ones don't hurt as much. She said that salicylic acid doesn't work for certain skin types, and mine seems to be one of them, because I've been using it regularly for almost three months without any major improvement.

She said dial soap is incredibly harsh on facial skin, and that even moisturizing afterwards doesn't help certain people (apparently, I'm one of them.)

If this doesn't work (she said give it four to six weeks) then she would refer me to a dermatologist, (since I'll be in CO at that point) and that I'd probably have to go on antibiotics, probably a topical as well as a by mouth, which I'd like to avoid. She asked if I was breaking out anywhere else, and while I do occasionally get one on my upper back, it's not breaking out, thank dog.

I did forget to ask her about the charcoal scrub, tea tree oil and coconut treatment, though I think that if this doesn't work, I'll try each of those for four to six weeks and see what's the most effective before going to a dermatologist.

I did ask about microdermal abrasion, but it's not covered under my insurance, and she said that as much as I'm outside, doing that puts me at a higher risk of getting sunburn on my face, which would only compound this issue.

I did forget to ask about spot treatment with this product as well. Has anyone used a regimen like this, plus used spot treatment for the ones that are actually red and breaking out, not just the ones that are threatening to come up?

She also told me to quit shaving for at least two weeks, even though I thought that shaving would help exfoliate my skin and allow pores to open up instead of clog up. She said it might be causing ingrown hairs, and that could be part of the issue.

Entirely too much information at the end of that phone call, though luckily I wrote down what she told me so I could remember lol.

Hopefully this works, though I'd like to find something that would stop it without having to do it every day, twice a day. If this DOES eliminate it, I may switch to a natural remedy and find one that I can just use every couple of days, or hopefully by then, my skin will be settled down and I can just go back to ignoring my face :p

and now my computer apparently just deleted everything on the SD card... everything... I lost ALL my pictures... FROM MY ENTIRE TRIP. EVERYTHING!
Once again in this thread, there are programs to recover those. Just don't shoot anymore or reformat the card until you try one. Several are free.
