In Texas, you can walk into any pawn shop and buy a pistol, shotgun, or rifle with just an id. If you have a concealed handgun license, you can carry in your glove box. I honestly can't remember the last shooting we had.

Edit: a few years ago there was a big shooting on ut campus downtown. I don't remember if anyone was hurt.
There are a lot of areas where everyone has guns. One that particularly comes to mind is Kennesaw Georgia. Everyone has a gun. There has been virtually no crime since most all citizens acquired guns. The crime level went way, way down. Where I lived in north Idaho, everyone had a gun...everyone I knew or knew of. It was the norm. And guess what? Far, far less crime than most places in this country. Who's going to break into someone's house (all these home invasions you hear of around my area in Wa now)...who, unless they're out of their minds from drugs would break into a house where they KNOW the homeowners have guns? Who would start shooting up a McDonalds or a 7-11 if they can be reasonably certain someone in there, some customer is wearing a six shooter in his holster? More people ought to learn how to use guns and carry them. I'll bet the farm there would be less crime.

Or you could say canadian laws DO make people safer..

The US has 4.14 homicides by gun per 100k people vs 0.76 here. I do think the gun laws should be revamped but I wouldn't want it to be like the US here. Its easy to kill with a gun, sure people are still going to murder each other.. but knives and the like produce less collateral damage. AND you have to get close enough..

I think both sides can have some pretty unrealistic expectations. For the people who want to completely ban guns in the US is highly unreasonable since that would punish those who own guns responsibly and only the outlaws will have guns. I mean, guns have been a prominent prescene in American culture since the beginning. Guns are too wide spread for it to be ban and having much affect. Banning guns in a country where guns were barely introduce in the first place is more effective.

At the same time, please don't compare guns to other weapons. No one is saying that banning guns means no crime or that people would not find other ways to murder people. Guns are just much more effective in killing or harming people fast and easy. Very few weapons today would kill or harm the total amount of people in just a few minutes like what occured in Colorado. The same as in Viriginia Tech and Columbine. That is why people are fed up with guns. It is a weapon that, at times, is pretty easy to get and can cause so much death and so little time. That is why the issue of guns IS unique compared to other weapons used for murder.

I would not be comfortable with guns being allowed in all places, even places like the movie theater or school. While you have people who will own them responsibly, you will also have the many Zimmerman's who owning a gun makes them much more confident and trigger happy. I also don't think everyone owning a gun is what made the crime rate down in certain places. There are always other factors since you have countries with little crime rate with guns ban.

If someone had a gun in that movie theater, maybe the tragedy wouldn't have hurt so many people. Who knows. Though seeing as the guy threw tear gas which would affect the visibilty of many of the people, it might have made it worse since some people might have started shooting indiscrimately. The gunmen also had a bullet proof vest while the people in the theater didn't so the odds would still have been set against them. I think what might have made a difference is law inforcement being there at the scene. There was none. At the movie theater I go to, there is at least two policemen at the scene.

Gun control might be the answer, but like in so many cases, how in the world are you going to weed out the psychopaths who do this? How many of the people who cause these shooting sprees have a criminal record? In most cases, they have none so they would still be able to attain these weapons. There really is no win-win sitaution.

Besides the obvious RIGHT to defend ourselves against slime who break into our homes or threaten our lives, let's not forget the biggest reason that we were given the right to keep and bear arms. That is to defend ourselves against a tyrannical government, should one ever get out of hand with it's control. That's what sparked the whole thing in the first place. If it weren't for that right, if the early colonists did not own guns when they came to America, there would be no America. We would have been at the mercy of a tyrannical government at that time. That was the whole point of breaking away and creating America. And that is why we have the right to keep and bare arms.
Very, very good point. It would honestly have to be an all or nothing..no guns for the entire world, all abolished, no guns for the govt or other countries or anything, before I'd be comfortable giving them up.

you can make all the laws you want, it won't keep criminals from getting them.
in the old soviet union in the 80s the militia (national police) in Moscow averaged one officer a week murdered for their pistol. the borders were well controlled & smuggling was almost impossible so that is how the criminals got their guns.

Yes. I firmly believe in our right to bear arms. (but not to arm bears!) We've been over, under, around, and through this subject many times and my opinion will not change.

Laws only affect the law abiding.

This fellow in CO (like other mentally ill or law breakers anywhere) will find a way to accomplish what they want regardless of gun laws.
^ Firmly believe in this, as a Canadian with my PAL. :)

Read page 1 only, so somebody probably beat me to this. But homeboy got his hands on gas canisters, which I can't imagine being legal for civilians. Obviously the laws did not stop him. But maybe if someone in that theater had had a gun, he could have been stopped after the first few rounds. Maybe not. But when criminals fear being dosed with their own medicine, then we have balance. Disarming the public only creates victims.

And I love Ted Nugent. He may be crazy, but he's got a lot of good ideas. I would vote for him as president tomorrow.

ETA: the only reason I have no gun is because my ex husband took them all and I can't afford one.

Ah, the good old gun discussion. We don't own any guns... Well, I take that back, my husband collects civil war guns, but they don't count per se.

I don't get the gun culture in the US, seeing people carry heat in public makes me highly uncomfortable. I think a lot of people here in Indiana shouldn't be allowed to drive because their driving is quite terrible.... How do I know some stranger is intelligent enough to handle a gun? The little amount of training needed is worrisome to me.

What I certainly don't understand is why Joe Schmoe needs to have an assault rifle?! I just don't get it.... But I'm from Europe and it's certainly a cultural thing.

I don't prefer knowing just anyone can get a gun with little to no training, no psych eval, no classes, nothing. Just buy a gun and go do whatever you want with it. THAT is the disturbing part to me, because I know anyone who can't shoot, is emotionally or mentally unstable, or even Vet's prone to PTSD and flashbacks can just go stroll in somewhere and buy a gun. That's scary.

But people having guns in general don't bother me.

On that we can certainly agree. I do not understand the need for those types of weapons either. Srsly? You're going to pull out an assault rifle to hunt? To guard against intruders? What would you need that for? Someone who disagrees please explain.......perhaps I've over looked something obvious?

I suppose, but it's hardly better these days, seems to be getting worse... And our laws didn't seem to help that...

It's been that way with handguns for a long time, but the long gun registry was a BILLION dollar waste of time and money...

I have assault rifles. I don't hunt. I don't think I'm going to need those against intruders. Probably the hand guns would be quicker to grab. But do you know why I have them? For two reasons. 1) They're a blast to target shoot with. Absolutely awesomely fun. They're accurate as all get out. A couple of them are very light weight. You can hold them against your cheek to take aim and there's no recoil. One in particular is out of this world exhilarating to shoot and can turn a bolder into gravel with one shot, can shoot through concrete. They're just really cool for target shooting. And the other reason...#2) Because I can. ;)

I think my dad has a handgun somewhere in the house - this was before we ever had dogs and he got a new one just before Katalin came home - apparently he doesn't think the big goofy white dog is protection enough; and he's probably right LOL

We've never ever been in a situation where it's been pulled out - but I think it's like a safety blanket for him; he likes knowing that it's just there.
We haven't got a security system at home, never have had a break in either - just the odd issue with prowlers every now and again.

For sure though regulation on whom gets to acquire them needs to be far better regulated - and IMHO thorough psych evaluations and handling classes should be given and part of license renewals and indeed before the person is cleared for purchase of a firearm.

They have buyback programs here. Never did it personally so I don't know how it works. But I think it's basically bring in a firearm, get some money for it, no questions asked. The problem is that it only gets a fraction of the guns off the street. The mayor of Newark once made a public announcement, he was proud the city went thirty dayswithout a homicide...

who needs a doberman, or a pit bull, or a toy poodle or an english bulldog?
who needs a porsche, or a mustang, or a dodge ram 3500, or a suburban?
who needs a house with a bedroom for each child?

i had a long detailed explanation but these questions answer your question far better?
