Another forum I go to has a function where when you type something in the title bar for a new thread, it automatically searches for those terms. That's also a vBulletin forum, so I'm sure the same thing could be implemented here.

I also second organizing all the stickies and stuff into a FAQ thread, with links to the different threads, I think that'd be a good thing.

MJB:

The stickies are the ones on the top portion of each individual forum; the training, puppy, general, firehydrant, dog breeds, etc. They have a little blue thumb tac along side them. They always stay right there. So, you have to scroll down past them to see the active, more current threads.
Yes, I have seen those. I almost always just click on New Posts when I log on, though, so I haven't paid alot of attention to them. I've rarely started a thread, but that's about the only time I have gone to one of the forums.

I guess I need to search this site a little more and see what all I'm missing!!

They're like banner ads . . . The eye automatically sweeps over them to find where the "real" (unstickied) threads begin.

I think a good idea might be to have one FAQ sticky for each forum, with a list of common thread topics, and links to threads where it's already been discussed
I think THAT ^^ would be a wonderful idea........and even BETTER if the text of the title could be made a different color so it's noticeable to anyone stopping in, new or old :)

I have read most of the stickies at some point and do think they are a good idea. The SS ones and ones that you want people to see imo should be there because if not some people might forget about them, I know I would do anyway.

You guys are amazingly insightful and perceptive. Well.....I was just wondering about all this for my own, personal curiosity. I really have no control over how these things are organized or how the forum is designed. But I might point the powers to be toward this thread just to see what they think. Love all the ideas though.

Most of my thoughts have already been mentioned ..

I've always felt that the stickies are kind of haphazard and not clear enough so that people notice them - and many don't even know what a "sticky" is. If only important things were stickied and clearly labeled, more people may be apt to go to them when looking for info.

When some of the forum sections have numerous stickies that are of limited interest, people learn to just scroll past them, too. And that habit carries across to other sections.

And I also think that many people are inherently lazy .. they want the exact advice for their dog and don't want to spend the time looking.

I have to give credit to those who give the same training advice over and over and over. It gets really old and I don't blame anyone for giving up after awhile. It's one of the reasons I've put several "articles" on my website and just link to them when people want to know something. It's just easier. And I'm a member of several forums, and I'm hit and miss on all of them because you tend to see the same stuff (different name is all) over and over. Every dog forum has its own "feel" but when it comes right down to it, the questions are almost all the same.

I'd like to see stickies in the training session all clearly marked. i.e. "Housebreaking", "Walking on a Loose Leash", "Stays", etc. Just having the basic subject and nothing else would help a lot, I think.

You need to leave my B5 A4 forum alone...

Their stickied FAQ and DIY guide is awesome though. I've used it several times.

I know this is a link to another forum, I dunno why, but I guess it's a bad thing. But this is the perfect way to handle sticky threads.

i have been on forums where they have just one or two stickies like this instead of several ones. i like that format, and make use of the stickies like this quite a bit.

the hardest part would be getting them set up in the first place.
