All right, I just called animal control to follow up. They said that they left the owners a warning. I hope that works, but somehow I doubt it.

My husband is really upset, especially about all the things going on with Voodoo. He said "Those stupid people and those stupid dogs had better not ruin MY puppy."

So tomorrow, we're going to have a little sting operation in the morning. We're going to get up early and wait for the dogs to come. If they show up, we're going to try to catch them and take them to animal control. Then the owners can either pay all the fines to get them out, or they'll *hopefully* be adopted out to a more responsible home.

Wish me luck.

Gempress I think you should get all of your neighbours to lodge a complaint with AC too. It'll hold more power. It sounds like they won't do much if it's just one person and no 'evidence' but if your whole neighbourhood is upset maybe they'll listen.

I have to agree about the chi comments they do seem a bit harsh at times. And I can see how Chi owners would be offended. I'm sure people would be upset if people were suggesting you boot a GSD or catching those ****ing pits.

I agree with Saje on both points. I was shocked to see people saying the dogs should be kicked or maced. Though I would definitely agree with kicking the owner. :D

Good luck catching them, Gempress.

I don't know if you can do that or not, unless they are on your property. I had to sit with onyx in my car until animal control came that one time. Have you tried an airhorn or
anything along those lines?
I would never mace or kick an animal but i would use an airhorn if i thought it would work. That sound would make me run away!

If there is a leash law in your town couldn't you catch them 1x give them to the owner, tell them if the dogs our out again and harassing your dog you will take them to AC next time? Then day after tomorrow catch them (cause they'll probably be out again) and bring them to AC. At least then the neighbors will have definitely had a warning AND AC already knows about the situation.

It's a JOKE. People need to take things less serious.

There are steryotypes for all breeds and we all know they arent true wich is why we can joke about it.

Good grief!!!

But of course since we're joking about it, it means we dont show any kindness towards animals.
A joke is only a joke when everyone is comfortable with it. When it gets to the point where others are getting offended, it's no longer a joke and people should really reconsider what they want to say "for fun." Basically, it's called respect for others - I know I would watch what I'll be saying from then on if someone found my comments to be offensive.

What are people going to think when they come onto this forum, looking for some help about a dog that's bugging their own dog? How about younger kids finding themselves on here, reading such comments, and then deciding it'd be fun and they'd want to try it on some dog? They're seeing "joke" advices about kicking the dogs and macing them. Or letting their bigger dog attack and eat the smaller ones. Chances are, not everyone is going to look at it as though it's a joke. So what are they going to do? Go out and kick their neighbor's dogs the next time it comes around, most likely. Or how about take out their pepper spray and use it on the dog? There's enough dog abuse in this world, we don't need to hear about more, and it's our responsibilty, as dog lovers, to not give out ideas such as those already mentioned.

Oh, and let's not forget that some people, such as Jess2416, are relying on Chazhound to do good stuff for them. If I read correctly, some that have already written letters to the president of the South Carolina shelter, Elaine, have mentioned that they're from Chazhound. I think someone even told Elaine that she should come by and check out this forum and some of Jessica's posts, to see how well she takes care of Chloe. Well, so Elaine decides to come on here to see and do some investigating, comes across this thread, and sees some of the comments made in this thread. What is she going to think? Probably that these are the same people who had written her e-mails, and when there's a sticky situation that can't easily be solved, they're going to resort to kicking and macing the dog. These are the same people that are going to be giving Jessica advice when she asks for help dealing with Charlie. I don't know about you, but personally, I don't think it makes for a good impression.

And that's all I'm going to say about this.

Look, I had to pay $1000 to have a dog that I used to have patched up because I did not want to harm the neighbor's dog when it attacked her.

Sooo, I let nature play out it's course. Well my lab mix girl (then a 4month old pup)rolled over in defeat, and was GUTTED by this little unneutered jack russel MALE.

Now we all hear that males won't hurt a puppy, or that adult dogs won't harm a puppy. Well BS!! Obviously that isn't true. :(

Again, I will mace ANY dog when it is attacking mine. I'd rather see it maced than poisoned by someone else. And if the owner and Animal control isn't responding what else would you have her do?!?

I understand that they are fence fighting but it has gone on long enough. She has waited and things are getting worse. It is never good to let your OWN dogs learn aggression like that. Then that can only cause bigger problems in the future. Nobody wants to have their dog turn dog aggressive.

At this point, something needs to be done. What can you suggest that she can do that WILL work?? She obviously can't catch them. The owners obviously don't care and are just laughing about it.

BTW-
Who is going to pay for the damage to her fence, or yard? Or how about for the trainer to come out and help Voodoo regain a happy viewpoint on other male dogs? I'm sorry if I sound harsh but let's face it- sometimes playing by the rules DOESN'T work.

Besides macing it won't kill them but it will teach them one hell of a good lesson. Which would be a good thing- Especially before another neighbor gets ahold of it and does something worse to them.

PS

I still say leaning on their bell every morning that their dogs wake yours up is also a good lesson to them, which does not involve kicking or mace...

Oh and have you tried calling the police? I don't remember if you mentioned doing that or not.

Well, no chihuahuas this morning *yet*. I hope they never show up again.

And I know some of the techniques advised on this thread, such as macing, etc., don't strike a good chord with some of the members. I guess I should apologize...but I'm not going to.

You have no idea how unbelieveably upset I am about Voodoo's new-found dog aggression. It literally gets me in tears every time I think about it. I once had a universally friendly little dog. When he showed up in our yard as a stray just one month ago, he ran eagerly up to Zeus to say hello. And I see that eroding right in front of my eyes, every time those dogs come around.

Is it the fault of the chihuahua owners? Of course. But what do you do if the owners do nothing? Could you just sit there and watch while some idiot's pets literally tormented your dogs into behavioral problems?

Notice I said "dogs". Plural. Last night, Zeus tensed up when he saw a tiny dog on our walk. Zeus NEVER does that. Fortunately, I was able to divert his attention, and he relaxed after a moment. But I think I'm going to be taking him around friendly dogs a lot more now, before it becomes a real issue.

We've talked to the owners, called animal control and done the best we can to scare the chihuahuas away. Until yesterday, nothing we've done has worked. And even now, I'm leery that those dogs may still come back.

Basically, it comes down to this. I am a dog lover. But I love MY dogs much more than I love these chihuahuas. And if it comes to using unpleasant techniques to keep those chis away.....a bit of dog mace, high-pressure water hose, or even swatting those chihuahuas on the rump when they come near our home....I will do it. When I adopted my dogs, I took on the responsiblity to take care of them. Whatever that entails.

BRAVO, Gempress! You're right - I don't think any of us would ever willingly be cruel to an animal, but if it's a choice between that and OUR DOGS suffering, there is no choice. Not only our love, but our obligation is to the dogs who grace us with their presence in our homes.

*clapclapclap*

There isn't anything I would not do to protect my dog.

Gempress, I'm really sorry. This issue seems to have escalated and sounds like it's really bothering poor Zeus and Voodoo. I certainly hope that you get it worked out.
