Rory was just scratching at his neck and got a toenail stuck in his collar. He let out the most GOD AWFUL screech I have ever heard. Luckily I was in the same room and could untangle him easily, but I think with the way he was panicking he may have broken his leg if left to his own devices! Now I'm wondering if I should have their collars on them while I'm not here....would a break-away collar have come off with the force from his leg pulling at it? He's not very powerful.

Well, mine used to be naked all the time until they got out of the gate one time and we had a horrible 20 minute search for my 'slow' doggy. I worried about them not having a phone number to call on them, so I got them tags and collars. We have since installed an additional lock to the gate, so maybe I'll just let them go collar-less again. I'd rather not have a choking or broken leg incident. Plus all my neighbors know who they are if they were to get out.

Have they been microchipped??
I don't know how easy this might be for you, but you could keep the collars by the door and put them on before you let them outside.
My kiddo's a troublemaker so he's not outside alone/not being watched very much. But if you want to keep collars on, i definately think break-away collars is the way to go.
