Just got back from seeing it in 3D with the kids. It was very good. For fans of the TV show, it kept pretty true to the storyline. The CGI was very impressive and I loved Appa :D

Anyone else see it or going to see it?

Haven't seen it, and my movie fund is all spent up so I might just wait to see it when it comes out on DVD...but a friend of mine did get me hooked on the cartoon, so I think I would like it.

I want to see it but will probably wait until it comes out on Dvd. I'm to cheap to go to the movie theater. Besides right now if I go anywhere near the theater, I'm going to have to sit and watch the new twilight movie. And I'm not spending that kind of money to sit with a bunch of girls/women sigh through the whole movie. LOL

Definitely going to be on the DVD list when it comes out. Kids loved it and I enjoyed it very much, too. Much better than that other movie called Avatar ;)

That is the FIRST I've heard anybody say it was good. D= I have been cautiously optimistic and even got really excited in this past week for it, but with all the reviews lately saying it's absolutely terrible, now I'm not sure if I want to go see it or not... one of my co-workers is taking her kids this weekend, I think I will wait and hear what she thinks before I go.

That said I just finished watching through Season 2 of the animated series last night and am busting into Season 3 tonight! I wanted to re-watch it to familiarize myself with everything again... got very carried away and am super into it all over again, LOL.
My thoughts before seeing the movie and after watching season 1 fresh are 1) it was hard enough to find somebody to voice Iroh after Mako died, how would they find an actor even close to embodying that much awesome?! and 2) nobody will be nearly as funny as animated Sokka (and I've heard he is not comedic relief at all, which IMO is the worst possible news. =<)

The reviews I read have nothing but horrid things to say about it. Roger Ebert said it was an agonizing experience in every category he could think of... and many established directors are sure this will kill Shymalan's career.

Unfortunate, because as much as I wanted to seethe every time I saw the review... I was really hoping it would somehow save itself when people actually saw it. :<

I want to re-watch the series instead. The series was so great!

I've never watched the series but have heard it's decent. Is the series worth watching? How long is it? I've been on an anime kick lately. /nerd/

I love the series. Greatest thing Nickelodeon has put out in many, MANY years and probably the last great thing they'll do for many years to come, too. It's not too long - three seasons and 20 episodes per season. There are some sort of dorky filler episodes in there (it is still largely a child's cartoon) and at times the voice acting is not the best, but on the whole, I think it's awesome! Definitely recommend it to anybody who enjoys animation.

I saw it last night, thought it was absolutely terrible. They purposefully changed the way they pronounce some of the names, and the result is that anyone who watched the show will cringe every single time they say Aang (So that it sounds like 'wong'), Saka (Soka), or Iro (E-ro, like saying the name of the letter). The plot will be entirely incomprehensible to those who haven't seen the first season multiple times, and they skip over a lot of important events.

Perhaps the most glaring change is the complete lack of comedy in the movie. The show is so awesome because of the comic relief woven into the story and characters, and it helps to develop some of the characters. The movie takes itself completely seriously, the acting is pretty terrible, and they surprise you at the end by letting you know they're going to change the timeline of the story in a huge, glaring way. I sincerely hope that they do not try to make a sequel to this movie.

There's a good reason that it has 8% on Rotten Tomato.

Yes, the timeline is being stretched out over 3 years. I should have mentioned that.

We all, of course, have our opinions. I've seen some terrible movies. This wasn't one of them. I allowed myself to enjoy it for what it was. ;)

Both my husband and son have been waiting for this movie to come out for a while. They loved the series. I think they even saw the animation movie, can't remember, I wasn't much into it.

We're going to see it today. My husband called from work yesterday and asked if Shawn read rotten tomatoes yet (my son lives by that site) because they gave it poor reviews. I asked Shawn if he did, which he didn't, and I asked him to not check out the site until AFTER the movie. I don't want him to be influenced by the critics. He's a type of kid that would be.

Glad to hear that they stayed true to the story, I think that was my son and husband's main concern.

They did? I thought it was going to be a continuation, it wasn't?

That was another concern of there's, on how they could put some much story into such little time.

No, it's book 1. Sure there were some differences to the animated series. It's essentially season 1 compressed into 1:45. The 3 year thing, IMO, is a necessary evil when using live actors so they can continue to use the same kids, who will obviously get older in appearance for subsequent movies (if they are made).

As for critics reviews, I've never taken much stock in them. I'm not defending the movie as an Oscar winner or a best of all time movie, but I found it quite enjoyable. Also, as far as adaptations go, I've always been able to separate them from the source. I take the Harry Potter movies as a separate entity from the "cannon" of the books, for example. It's entertainment. For two hours last evening, I and my kids were entertained :dunno:

But certainly don't take my opinion or the opinion of anyone else as gospel. See it for yourself (either in the theater or wait for DVD) and make up your own mind.

Ok, what about parents who've NEVER watched the show taking their kids to see it? My kids have watched the TV show, but of course Kevin and I have not........will we be lost? Is it easy to follow if you don't have any background?

I think the trailers look good, and our boys want to see it.

I've watched the show, so I don't think I can speak to that. I think there was enough to follow it and understand what's going on. Personally, I don't think you'll be lost. But just in case, here is the nutshell - Basically there are four tribes - earth people, water people, air nomads and fire nation. Each tribe has "special" folks called "benders" that can control those elements (air benders, water benders, etc.). The "avatar" can control all four (once trained) and keep balance. Each avatar is a reincarnation of a previous life and is born into each tribe in sucession. Air, Water, Earth, Fire. The last avatar before the kid in this one was from the fire nation, so they knew the new one would be an air nomad. When he found out that he was going to be the avatar, the kid, Ahng, ran off, but ended up getting trapped in the water and frozen for a hundred years. In the mean time, the fire nation started a war and wiped out all of the air nomads, hoping to kill off the avatar (knowing he'd be an air bender). So for about 100 years, the fire nation has been working on their world domination scheme. Queue movie :)

If I had to come up with criticisms, the acting of the main characters was not superb. A bit forced and the dialog was a bit cheesy at times. Also there could have been more "character development".

I was never a fan of the series. It was so boring.

BUT! I LOVE Dev Patel and am so glad he is getting work past Skins and Slumdog Millionaire. So I may see it just to see him :D.

I'm interested in seeing it. I liked the previews, but then, I've never watched the shows. I probably will, but I'll try to see the movie first.

Also, eddie, it's just canon. It's pronounced can-non, but it's spelled with just one 'n' lol

And that's how I watch the movies too. Like they're a separated telling of the story.
