It is almost midnight, and I just now got home. I don’t know how to feel about tonight – I am somewhat frustrated, exhausted, and confused. The original Great Dane I thought I was going for had been adopted, but it appears as though my name gets around. I didn’t understand fully, as the situation was not clearly portrayed to me. I ended up with a disaster on my hands, and I willingly have put myself out there and I don’t know if I am going to regret it or not.

Well here is the story, since I know all of you are curious. I got a phone call around the time I posted asking if I was still interested in a Great Dane, while they are on the top of my “to own†list I wasn’t in a huge hurry to own one personally. Well, I said sure and decided to drive the 1 hour and 20 minute drive out there to pick up what I thought was a Fawn Great Dane female. Instead, what I arrived I was greeted by some disarrayed people and a (for a Great Dane) small Dane female. They explained to me that her real owners were going through a divorce, and for it two Great Danes and a Westie were suffering. Now folks, let me tell you, this dog is underweight by a good 25-50lbs if not a bit more, is suffering from dander, and some major hair loss. She has a broken tail where it had been slammed in a car door and has a bite out of her ear. Her eyes are sunken in, and her hair is dull. Her ribs are jutting out of her sides along with her backbone. Not to mention her toenails are WAY too long for her feet. She is what I would consider a mess, and when I saw these people practically on their hands and knees begging me to take her with me… I honestly couldn’t say no.

Well now I need help naming her, she is a purebred Great Dane female pure black in color with white tipped toes and some white on her chest and belly. She is not even 2-years old yet, so now I have an abused Dane who is still in her puppy stage. Oh joy! We’ll get through it though. We worked through the rescue to finalize the pleas for this Dane to be helped by the people. It is all so complicated and I am barely coherent enough to type this. I am really sorry but it is now 12AM and I am about ready to fall out of my chair, so this is all I have to say other than the following so everyone knows.

She met Joans tonight for the first time, it went over very smoothly. However, she has been mesmerized by the bunny, rats, and birds so that is going to be something to accomplish. She loves my husband, which is a good sign but I am unsure about the keeping her part yet. We’ll see how that goes after we fatten her up, get her some good vet care and some TLC and we’ll see.

These pictures are not the best, but for being so late at night they are good enough to let you see how horrible she looks:

"Lighting in this is horrible, but you know what I am exhausted and it is good enough to give you an "idea" we'll try to get better tomorrow"

She got a bath tonight, some food, some Obedience lessons, and some love! That is all we got for tonight, but we do need help with names.

ANYONE HAVE ANY NAME IDEAS?

Aww, poor girl. You're her angel tonight, bless you for helping her. Whether or not you are meant to keep her in the long run, you were obviously meant to be there for her right now.

Hmmm....names....

Jett is pretty.
Olive
Domina (as a play on Domino, and it's latin for Lady, as in a high born lady.)
Ash
Char
Onyx
Jezebel ;)
Lyra
Miss Virginia (from the Alabama Jubilee)

She kind of looks like an Olive or a Lyra from the pictures, but it's really hard to tell. She'll let you know when you find her name. :)

Awww she's cute!! But to me she doesn't look that underweight! A little maybe but not much. She looks to be in the same condition (well less muscle) as most of the Danes I see competing in agility and other dog sports.

She is, there was a vet on scene last night who said she is AT least 25-30lbs underweight :)

Most vets are sooo used to seeing fat dogs they think all fit ones are skinny lol.

Talk to some dane people. I know many clients get told by their vets that their dogs are skinny. BUT if you talk to vets who have more than just pet clientel the story is often different. I have had some clients come (to take agility lessons with OBESE dogs that their vet says is just fine...) You should be able to see the ripple of a dogs ribs (short coated dogs) when they turn and move. If you feel the back of your hand.. that is how your dog's sides should feel.

Thinner animals live longer and are healthier than ones that are 'well fleshed'. My dogs (well the BC is fat lol) are about the same condition as that Dane..

I agree with a little weight gain for a pet dog (so she looks better.. not for health reasons) but she looks pretty shiny and decent to my eyes. ANd cute!!

here are some fit and stunning Danes.. CHROMADANE you will notice they have more muscle.. but not more fat than your girl.

A-w-w...she looks so sweet. She'll be fine with your loving care. You two should have loads of fun together once she adjusts. Good luck. I think it's an exciting thing how you're embarking on this new adventure. She's sure pretty....love that black.

I agree with Dekka, she is slim but not super underweight. I liked mine a little heavier, but some people don't.
Btw, she was probably very stressed at the time you took the video...It will amaze you at the amount of hair she will shed when she is stressed.

Glad you have her, I hope you fall in love with her and can give her a permanent home.

She is lovely. She also does not look thin to me. She looks like she could put on some condition but certainly not weight.

i think it is almost impossible to tell from a photograph of a black dog how skinny the dog is. I know i took photos of Victor when i first got him and from some angles he didn't look so bad, the shadows of his ribs didn't show in the flash. Good luck with this dog, it looks like you arrived when needed most. Poor baby.

Thank you for helping this girl. Oh, when I look at her face getting a bath, she looks so content. She knows that she's getting lots of love at your home. I'm not very good at name, sorry.

Well good news! I found another foster home for her. One that owns, shows, and trains Danes so they'll know what to do. They even saw a picture and says she is too skinny and needs to be fattened up. She won't be in my care anymore! I can go back on my search for a dog of my own. Thanks guys, but I felt that this Dane was not the one an deserved some "proper" care from someone who knows about Dane weight since I obviously don't :) Happy ending! Yay!

THat's good. I went to pet finder and looked day after day after day. FOr weeks literally until i saw VIctor and my heart went gathump....my breath caught in my chest and i KNEW he was the right one. Good thing i made my mind up before i got him because for the first 6 months my Mother said "you don't have to do this...TAKE HIM BACK". He was horrible. Wouldn't eat, wouldn't sleep, rack of ribs, and flailing legs. Look at him now. Trust your heart. You will know when you see the right one.

If its not the right dog thats good you found her a home. But don't give up on a dog because you need to learn more :). And she did need weight but in the form of muscle ... not fat. There is ALWAYS more to learn ;)

If you still want a dane I suggest you go talk to some dane people.. breeders etc (even if you want to rescue) so you can get to know the ins and outs of the breed.

I'll be honest, I don't know how a "show dog" is suppose to look. I've worked with Danes, and I know Dane people. This is how I found the man coming to get her now. However, she is too "skinny" IMO - if you all feel differently that is your right. I don't like skinn dogs, never have. I find it repulsive when you can see a ribcage and count the ribs, or see the spine jutting out.

Your opinion of underweight and mine are different. That does NOT mean I don't know about the breed based on one weight issue. No Dane I've ever met was THAT skinny, and I'm sorry but I find it to be disgusting. I will continue my search, and honestly as I said "it is not my time for a Dane" but I'll get one in the future :)

Sorry you seem upset.. but in none of the pics you posted could you count ribs. And no .. show dogs are often kept a little fatter than sport dogs... Just like halter horses are usually a lot fatter than riding horses...

I said you should be able to see the ripple of ribs as the dog moves (did you look at the dogs on that site? Did you think they looked 'disgusting'?)

Muscle will also cover ribs too you know :).

I honestly agree, that dog didn't look in bad condition to me... even the toenails weren't that long. I've taken in dogs where the nails were so long, they had curled like curly q's, and one actually had to have the toenails removed from the pads of their feet, where they had embedded. Hers just looked... maybe a hair bit long.

She really doesn't look that skinny at all. A few pounds and some muscle needed, but that's it.

This is what a truly malnourished dog looks like, this was Triumph when I rescued him:

Nevermind, not even going to bother - you all are right, I am wrong. I should be able to have opinions.
