Tonight (Friday Jan 6) The Dog Whisperer starts a new season on the National Geographic Channel at 8:00pm Eastern/7:00pm Central.
Cesar Millan has an amazing talent in working with behavior problems. You can learn a lot about the way dogs think because all of his techniques are based on the canine psyche and not the human way of thinking. I highly recommend this program.

I think he's a dumbass. His techniques are based on god knows what...

Honestly if they didnt hand pick the dogs he "trains" he'd probably be mauled already.

oriondw,
Not sure you watched the same series. For one thing he does not "Train" dogs, he teaches owners. And I have seen him bitten severly by more than once by dogs he was trying to calm.
Also, if he is indeed so dumb, how does he manage to keep that pack of dogs that he has rescued and cares for at his home? Most were given up for bad aggressive behavior.

I love Cesar Millan..come on, give credit where credit is due. :) you may not agree with his entire thinking, but he does know dog behavior. I look past the 'hype' of his marketing, and see a man that still has knowledge to pass along. :)

orion, I think the term 'dumbass' is rather harsh. the 'dumbass' is the person that brings home their dog...ties it outside...and hasn't a single clue. :)

He cashes in on people thinking his "psychic" powers help him train dogs...

That just shows he's full of it and does it for the money.

He's not better trainer then anyone who studied dogs behaviour. Im sure he helps people, but I dont like how he tries to teach owners, my personal opinion...

well yes, the hype is what makes me not like him.

Im sure he's just as capable as any other dog trainer who has working with dogs, but nothing special people make him out to be.

you're just seeing the 'hype' again. maybe he's not more capable than any other dog trainer.........but, I'm just saying he certainly isn't a 'dumbass' either. is he in it for the bucks??? ....maybe, but again...he STILL has an understanding of canine behavior that most people do not have, so I can't possibly bash him. :)

What makes you think I dont understand what he does?

He's making money and laughing all the way to the bank because alot of people believe in his psychic abilities and that makes him somehow special. ;)

I've heard more than a couple people say if they jsut walk their dog every day it will behave. I haven't heard anyone that watches the show come away with anyhting that sounds helpfull other than one admitting they need to go to some obedience classes:p

I haven't seen the show but does he really just tell everyone to walk their dogs?

Has something changed on his show? I have never seen anything to do with psychic abilities when I watched it.

no, he never has claimed 'psychic' abilities...he says he 'understands' dog behavior. period. I'm sure many people have this ability, and I applaud them. again, he isn't unlike other magnificent dog trainers...he just happens to be known in the media. you can't hate him for that...LOL is he the 'KNOW-ALL' person on the planet....probably not. he's just also not a 'dumbass'. he is just another avenue of information out there...where you watch, and take from it as you will. just like EVERY piece of internet information isn't gospel..you weed thru and take what helps you. :)

I've watched quite a few of his shows and he's okay. I like that he encourages communication, exercise and interaction with the dog. He emphasises the role of the person as the dog's leader and instructor and that's good, as well.

That being said there are some things he does that I don't agree with, many situiations that I feel he could have handled better and without as much confrontation, but that's just how dog training goes. People have different approaches.

Cesar has no psychic abilities. He just knows how to command a dogs attention and respect through his actions, eye control and body language. Two main reasons ofr bad behavior that are apparent in the shows I have seen are indeed a lack of exercise for a breed that needs exercise, and a lack of authority by a dogs owner.

So basically he's not doing anything that any halfway informed dog owner or trainer would do? He just got a TV show out of it.

No. He often advocates the walk as tool in combination with a strategy for whatever your issue is. Since most folks {{who are in trouble}} dont walk thier dog enough or properly it could seem that {{if you dont watch attentively enough}} he prescribes walk as the panacea for all ills.

I have never heard him claim to be "psychic" like an animal communicator ...

I have seen some episodes from the show...he encourages more exercise, so the dog has a job to do, which I like...I think he's okay. I'm not a huge fan but I can't say I hate him.

I have more than my share of bad things about this man. I have meant to watch his show to form my own opinions, but from what I have heard, I believe him to be a misguided famous trainer that isn't as great as he thinks he is. ;) I hate that he never uses positive reinforcement, even for aggression. I have also heard that he advocates ruff-shaking and alpha rolls. For that fact alone, he has lost any respect taht I could ever give him.
