I never thought that a smooth wire fence could be so dangerous.
A horse I grew up with on my grandparent's ranch got caught in a smooth wire fence about a month and a half ago while everyone was at work. She didn't fight much, but at feeding time they found her, with one wire wrapped around her back leg. It was so tight it had cut off the circulation, and my mom said she had to use a set of bolt cutters to cut the wire because it was so tight.
Initially the damage didn't look too bad even though the cut was deep. My mom doctored her leg for a month and a half to no avail. It became gangrenous (even with massive amounts of antibiotics) and this poor sweet mare had to be put down.

I have a lot of fond memories of her. She was the first horse I "broke" to ride...by meaning that my 12 year old self was stupid enough to climb on her bareback and ride her around. She went off to a trainer not long after that and then she was dangerous to ride, I don't know what happened in between, but she was still a very sweet mare.

My mom told me the other day she had to be put down, I ended up crying on the phone...such a horrible thing to happen.

RIP "pretty thing" July 21, 1993 - February 2009

(yes that's me in the pic, at about 13 years old)
