I think whatever you get it will be loved so the breed type is up to you!
For a smaller type dog I like Cocker Spaniels...Maybe cause I own one! LOL
She is sooo sweet! Just got her groomed yesterday. Now she is a bald happy puppy!
Here is a pic of her She is Sophie the sofa dog!

I think the cocker may be too "furry"

Min Pins can be HYPER and Pugs have alot of problems. Chi might be good

It depends. When you say "not so furry" do you mean a dog that is non-shedding, or dog that is short-haired? Those are two very different things.

Toy poodles, bichon frise and maltese all have long coats that require regular maintenance, but they don't shed. Pugs have short coats, but they shed like crazy. They're actually considered a pretty heavy-shedding breed.

They really don't shed heavily though. Thats why I mentioned them.

I agree about taking the test....I've never owned a small dog, but have seen problems with many over my many years. The really only small dogs I've seen without an issue, are mutts. Don't kick Grammy !!!! I know many of you have GREAT small dogs !!! I just haven't met them !

Actually, MinPins and Chi's both tend to bark alot, ESPECIALLY when someone is at the door (all dogs bark at the door, just some more than others ;)). A not-so-good choice for someone who doesn't want much of watchdog.

Before recommending any breed I would need to know more about your lifestyle. Do you have kids, do you work long hours, would the dog be left alone a lot, how much exercise would you be wanting to do, do you want a dog thats easily trained, do you want a dog that will be very playful. Are you prepared for 15 years of commitment.

Seriously, please consider rescue. Sometimes the perfect "breed" is a unique mix just waiting to be rescued! And for a first dog, I'd definitely recommend that you think about a young adult - puppies are a ton of work!

If you do really, really want a puppy though, get a copy of Grammy's (BubbaTD) favorite book: How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With.
