I don't have a strong opinion of whether the parents made a foolish decision or not.
I do know that my kids would not have been allowed to do that, and the one that has not reached 18 still would not be.
If my child wants to sail around the world alone, he/she will have to wait until adulthood. I would hope the feat of sailing around the world would be huge enough, and breaking an age record would be fairly unimportant.
