I don't use shortcuts, but not because I have anything against them. My mom is allergic to some preservatives, so I grew up making everything from scratch. Now it honestly doesn't bother me or seem like additional work to make it from scratch, it's just normal. LOL.

One shortcut for gravy I dont mind is to use a premade homemade stock instead of the current drippings...not quite as flavorful but still passable.

Oh, yeah. Store-bought frozen crusts here as well. Just what was always used for our famous Chocolate Chip Pies.

It's so rich that having anything other than a somewhat bland crust kinda makes it inedible.

We make everything from scratch. I do buy ONE can of canned cranberries because I don't like home made (my mom makes home made ones, and everyone else liked them, but I prefer canned). We also buy ONE regular pumpkin pie from the store in case someone wants it (it usually goes to waste), and make the non-regular ones ourselves.

You guys are making me want turkey! We already had our thanksgiving last month.

Usually do almost everything from scratch, though the pumpkin pie from costco is pretty darn good, so got that. For Christmas not sure what we're bringing but not cooking and not hosting. :)

Not really a shortcut, but a random hint: for super-smooth and creamy pumpkin pie, add 1/4-1/3 cup of powdered coffee creamer to the filling. There's no need to add more liquid or alter the recipe in any other way; the creamer will dissolve without a problem. It really makes the pie silky smooth and ridiculously creamy.

Our Thanksgiving is past already but all this talk of turkey dinner makes me want to celebrate your guys' Thanksgiving too! Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!

But anyway, we do almost everything from scratch. Pie crust is usually store bought, but not always. Same with pie. Sometimes we make them, sometimes we buy them, and sometimes we don't have pie at all! But as far as the actual dinner goes: everything is home made except the cranberries (because apparently people like canned cranberries - I dunno, I don't like cranberries at all).

Also, I'm trying to picture this "turkey in a can"... not sure I've ever seen that!

Since my pumpkin pies already came out of the oven, this is filed away for future reference.

Of course, I use softened ice cream instead of condensed milk in mine as well. They come out really smooth and good. I'll have to try the ice cream and some creamer as well next batch.

I have just spent the entire day prepping and/or cooking/baking for tomorrow--so yeah, all homemade. I even cooked a fresh pumpkin to make the pumpkin pie filling with. Tomorrow I still have plenty to do--but there will be real mashed potatoes and gravy--but the rolls are store bought--from a bakery here. Their's are far better than my homemade!

For family dinners, always everything from scratch. This is actually my first year not having dinner with my or DH's family. The only thing we skimped on was doing a store bought pie crust (We're only brining pies) since our rolling sheet (plastic thing with measurements for pie/cookie sizes) recently got thrown away and we don't have a big enough cutting board!

99% homemade? Everything is homemade except for canned cranberry sauce and pie crusts! But, honestly, the pie "stuffings" are so good the crust really doesn't make any difference.

That canned turkey looks utterly disgusting. Ew.

Most of our stuff requires some homemade preparation. Pies are homemade, cranberry sauce is homemade, mashed potatoes are "real", stuffing is made from scratch.

For the first time like... ever.... our turkey is not being cooked by us. Some bbq place nearby is apparently taking orders for turkeys. Sooo we are getting a smoked turkey from them that we are picking up late tomorrow morning, and it is supposed to be FRESH from the oven. So we shall see. I think we are also cooking a couple turkey breasts at home because my family is so large that one turkey is not enough lol.

Actually, after having canned chunk chicken (like tuna, but chicken) I imagine that's actually not bad. I LOOOOOOOOVE canned chunk chicken breast. OMG I could eat it every day. Or alternate days, chicken one day tuna the next. SO GOOD. AND, I bet the bones in that thing are soft (like in the Wing-a-Ling dog food cans) so there would be no waste - bones for the dogs!

I'm only bringing a dessert. Cheesecake and pumpkin pie frozen yogurt. The only shortcuts I ever really use are store-bought pie crusts. And I don't like pie so it doesn't matter much to me anyway. :p

Yuck.. canned turkey. We have never done that and I'd rather not.. :lol-sign: Any way..
We usually make everything homemade but it's always just me, my brother, and my parents. And that's how we like it. We usually do a pie crust for the pumpkin pie as it has to be kind deep-dish crust. We usually buy one after they go on sale though because they're not bad. Pumpkin is actually my favorite pie.
So, it usually never goes to waste.

For the chocolate cream we usually buy keebler shortbread pie shell. We cheated and bought rolls this year so my mom isn't making them. We have enough stuff to do already. :p

You're in for a treat. I smoked turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas the last few years and they always come out great.
