Teething Pup

Baloo is teething and he's NOT enjoying it. He's constantly trying to chew on our pantlegs and shoes, tables and chairs, books, my hand, etc. I've tried doing what all the books say (that is, telling him 'no' and giving a toy to chew) but, more often than not, he keeps right on doing what he's doing.

Baloo can bite hard enough to break the skin, and all the 'BAD DOG!'s in the world won't stop him. What can I do?

rawhide! my little pup, who is about 13 weeks loves to chew and teeth on everything. Finally I got some rawhide rollups (not the kind with the knots on the end) for her and those things just keep her chewing occupied for hours. It's great. She's a small dog, so I'm not sure how well it works for larger breeds.

Large breeds sometimes swallow rawhides whole. Since they aren't digestible, they get stuck in the intestines and cause serious problems and possibly death. I wouldn't give your puppy a rawhide unless you're watching him very closely.

What about:
-Raw meaty bones (from a butcher, frozen)
-Nylabones
-A rag soaked in broth/water, frozen

Frozen stuff is always good for teething, so try the wash cloth soaked in water then frozen, or a kong filled with wet food or yogurt and frozen.

My dog never had problems with rawhides but I ended up changing to
Bully Sticks to be on the safe side after hearing the warnings about rawhide.

When Brinley was teething we would freeze chicken broth in ice cube trays and give them to her. We would also drench a dishrag, tie a not in it, and freeze it. Then I would play tug with her with the frozen rag.

I also recomend the bully sticks. I dont thinkw e would have gotten through the puppy time without them, she still eats them now, her and my other dog Butch fight over them all the time.

My pup is teething and I give her a (frozen) recreational raw bone once or twice a day. They work really well for her. She also enjoys chewing on her Kong either stuffed with peanut butter or empty. I also have a few nylabones laying around the house too that she'll sometimes chew.

My dad picked up some rawhide rollups for him...he spent a half an hour chewing one. They're waaaay too big for him to swallow whole, so I'm not too worried about that.

On the way home from work I got him a Kong and some of the puppy Stuff'n. He didn't like the Kong/biscuit combo, but I'll try the Kong and Stuff'n later.

He gets bored with his Nylabone after five minutes or so. Aside from the rawhide, he most likes to chew on Bobo (from the PetSmart commercial). We're going to have to buy a few back-up Bobos...this one is almost worn out after 5 days!

Just make sure he doesn't bite any pieces off. Once they do that, they can't seem to chew through the piece and end up swallowing it whole.

Give him something he CAN chew on.

I also give Cruiser ice cubes and frozen dish rags, as well as freezing his ring toy.
