I NEED to brush my dogs teeth but I am not sure what brand toothpaste to use. How do I go about brushing a 130 pound dogs teeth? I don't think he is going to like it!:yikes: I also heard Hartz brand toothpaste is bad and that is all I have been seeing in the stores so I will wait for your opinions.

Do you have an independently owned pet store? I've found these pet stores have the better quality products. Good luck!

Have you tried giving large bones for teeth cleaning?

Works great for my 85 lb dog. She is not that aggressive with the bones, so i don't have to fear her breaking teeth, or swallowing large chunks. I give her the big knee bones, or the smaller cartilage type ones...with no preservatives, or added toxins...just smoked.

She never gets these when she is alone.

I went to a smaller store in my area to get my good toothpaste, the same place that you find good dog foods at. I got C.E.T. enzymatic toothpaste for cats and dogs. I heard enzymatic are best so that when you brush even if you don't get a really good scrubbing it still works. My dog acted like he did not like the toothpaste at first, he would not lick it off the brush. So I put some peanut butter on and brushed with that first. Then used the regular paste and he was fine with it, loved the taste. I'm glad you are brushing his teeth it is something I tell all my friends to do because that was a big problem with our dog and we could not afford to have it done. He started getting bloody gums when we played tug, so we had to stop that. if it was up to me he would have gotten them done as soon as possible (actually his teeth would have need brushed starting as soon as we got him). I tried the Hartz once but none of them would touch it, I did not know it was bad.

oy.... I am going tomorrow to buy some t.paste and brush for the dogs... I think kong makes some....
It's too late for poor old dog though- she's 11 and we just discovered last night by chance she's got a few rotten teeth...:( We didn't know what was happening in there, but now we have to pay for testing, and dental surgery, so we are starting to brush teeth as soon as we get the supplies.
lesson learned,at least for us!

I'm not sure where to get raw bones. I am afraid to get them from Wal Mart and I am not even sure if they have them. I have never seen any bones there. If I can find a butcher what do I ask for and how do you know he is not giving old stuff that's been sitting around? I know I am paranoid but I have never fed my dog anything raw. If I could find a place I trusted I would try it.

I just get raw bones at the grocery store. Max always liked the ones filled with marrow. If you get them at a human grocery store you know the are human grade and fresh.

The shank with marrow are good ! I like them better than knuckle bones . They are hard to find as most meats come in already boned .

I give tosca plenty of large bones too. She loves marrow bones and knuckle bones...and pork neck bones. I get them from a butcher so there's always a steady supply for her. Fresher and cheaper than all that stuff in the pet stores.

My german shepherd can not eat real bones, he gets sick, and the other toy type things made for keeping teeth clean he chews up too quickly for reap the benefits. I started cleaning his teeth by using boiullan and just rubbing it on his gums to get him used to having something in his mouth and gradually worked up to a finger brush, he doesn't mind the finger brush with some type of beef/chicken flavored doggy toothpaste. They make a starte kit to help you figure out what will work the best for your pet

Same here. I give my dogs "teeth-cleaning" bones about twice a week. My vets are very impressed.
