teaching the treat on the nose

What is the best way to go about it? All Grizz wants to do is eat it, i tried saying leaveit and distracted him with another treat when he did but went back to wanting to eat it as soon as he finished the other treat. Any suggestions?

I can't get Charlie to "leave it" either so I'm interested to see what responses you get.

Have you taught a good leave it when it is on the ground? Ie can you put them in a down stay, put the cookie an inch or two from his nose and say leave it?

yes, he can do that very easily. I can put it right in between his feet when he is down and say leave it and he looks away from the treat.

And when I had him sitting to try and put it on his nose and said Leave it he looked away from my hand.

teach him to target your palm, or something so he will hold his head stationary. then add the 2 together.

I taught the treat-on-the-nose trick a little differently; I focused on the "stay" and 'release' aspect more than I did leave it.
I also started with a wooden close-pin (which, to me, was slightly similar to a med sized biscuit in size) rather than tempting with food

I started with the word "STILL" and my hand in the stay signal. I only had the treat on his nose just seconds.....then said ok and praised him like crazy. He began to understand what I was wanting from him. We started with seconds, and lots of praise, and then just increased the time in very small increments until he was able to do it longer. I love to teach tricks! Our newest trick is "SNUGGLE". He dives between my husband and I with his head under the pillows!! LOL I want to teach him lots of tricks for the nursing homes, but we won't be doing snuggle there!! Herbie does "BANG" too.........he drops down and plays dead for a second, so we have to work on staying down longer.

I started with the wait command rather than leave it since for Dante. I have to admit, this one cracks me up every dang time. I'm not sure why but it does.
And as you can see, we do it with toys as well as treats. :lol-sign:
